Default BD region compatability

Hi guys

This is my first post so if this question has been done a few hundred times already I do apologise.

My question is this: what are the regions for BD discs and what are their intercompatability constraints , and how closely do all manufaturers stick to them? I want to buy a BluRay player (stand alone player) in the UK and play US movies on it. Will this work?

Consider the Pioneer Elite Blu-Ray Player. The majority of Pioneer's DVD offerings are 'Region Free', which means you can play 'any' region DVD in the Player. I'm not sure yet if the Sony BDP-S1 will include that feature, but I'll check on it with my Sony Rep. and get back to you later today .

As far as I know, ALL UK discs (DVD and BR) are under Region 2 or Region B, whereas the US ones are Region 1 and Region A. Thus, they won't work another player unless that player has a region hack or something.

This question is exactly the same as I asked in another thread. The information I read was that the BD disc would check to see if the player was hacked/chipped and if so fail to play.

I like so many users in the UK have a mixture of European and US/Canada titles and naturally what a BD player to do the same.

If this could be confirmed one way or another that would really help.

I read somewhere that there is a difference in the new scheme such that Region 2 players will not play Region 1 discs but Region 1 players will play Region 2 discs...

Of course, treat this entirely as rumour

Will be interesting to see how it pans out as I do want to get films from Europe...

If the rumour is true (its true only if it has been officially denied) , then when funds are available one region 1 player will do me nice

My guess is that by using a code you'll be able to change your region just as you can with dvd players currently. This is because they tend to make 1 or 2 models for the whole world and its not cost effective to make a different player for each different region.

Where does Australia fit in? I used to import a lot of DVDs from there because they were cheaper than ours and often times anamorphic when ours weren't. I would hope to do the same with BDs some day.

As far as I'm concerned this is the multi million dollar question. Years ago it was proposed that we were region A. There has been nothing except speculation since then, most saying C because of "other". Blu Ray is supposed to be released here mid November, so at worst case we will find out then.

Thanks guys.. it's a shame because HDDVD/BD just hasn't arrived in europe yet (with a few tiny HD exceptions EG: SkyHD, XBOX360 there is no incentive as yet).

It'd be nice to think that the bold people buying these european region HD players (for two to three times their self same retail price in the USA) would not ALSO be stuck for content for years...

nyg, according to the blu-raydisc site Australia is region B

Blu-ray regions break down into this:

Region A: America, Japan, Corea, South East Asia
Region B: Grĝenland, Europe, Africa, Middle East, Australia, New Zealand
Region C: China, India, Russia, + a few others remaining in Asia

here's a map that shows it even better:

Region B isn't surprising but it'll be interesting to see if they really go through with it in the hardware/software because of all the DVD legalities. It's like asking to be sued all over again if they do.

What's really worth looking at when it comes out is how the DVD side of the BD players are encoded. If they play up region 4 on it then they're bound to get into a heap of trouble.
