Hello movie-lovers. I am expecting delivery on the 70 inch Aquos LC-70UH30U this evening. I am curious if anyone else has owned this particular tv?
I am really looking for some good guidelines on initial set-up calibration settings. I cannot find any specific to this model on the web. Thanks! Update: I finally found one site that had some calibration settings for this model television. I duplicated their settings last night and am pretty happy with the results. In case anyone else happens to have this tv the link is here: http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/sharp/uh30u/settings So, after living with this TV for a couple of days here are my early impressions. First off, the picture is very good and a nice step up from my old 46" Sony LCD. I am still getting my head around the massive 70 inch screen size. Using the settings at the above link I was able to get the picture right about where I want it for Blu-Ray playback and it is pretty stunning. I will still be tweaking and playing for a few more weeks before I have it nailed down but that is my usual procedure with a new TV. I can strongly recommend this set for blu-ray playback and the on board up-scaling to 4k seems very good from Blu-ray. If you are looking for the absolute best in picture quality there are better sets out there but most of them cost a lot more. (This model is THX Certified for what it's worth.) The is a major issue (in my book) in that when you are streaming over some apps the audio is permanently linked to the TV volume. I was able to get Netflix, Vudu and Cinemanow to work with the audio going out to the receiver only but other apps like Disney Movies Anywhere and the few games I downloaded to the tv only put out sound through the tv speakers as well as sending it to the receiver and there does not seem to be a way to fix this. So if you want to watch a movie on Disney Movies Anywhere you have to turn up the TV volume to get sound and that controls the level of sound sent to the receiver. This means you have to crank the receiver to overpower the sound coming from the TV Speakers. Not good. This sucks big time and I think Sharp needs to fix that in a hurry. In the meantime I will just keep streaming to my PS4 to keep it simple. I was able to stream 4k videos from You Tube directly to the TV and they did look amazing. I do not have Netflix's 4k service yet so I cannot comment on that. Another negative about this TV are that you cannot download Amazon Prime onto it so If you are looking to stream their 4k content this is not the TV for you. One of Sharps selling points for this TV is their Auquamotion 960 feature which give you an ultra smooth flowing image even in very high speed action scenes. What they don't tell you about this feature is that when you use it your picture actually gets about 50% darker so it is pretty useless unless you are in a totally dark room watching sports. ( am told that this is due to the fact that the screen has a native 120hz refresh rate and that to achieve 960 Hz it is actually flashing the LEDs 960 times per second. This results in less light being produced.) This is not a huge issue to me because I probably wouldn't use it anyway but they ought to tell you that before you buy the thing. I have a few weeks to decide if I want to keep this set. Right now, I am not sure. I do love the picture for blu-ray playback and it looks really good for games and streaming with the PS4 but all the bells and whistles on this tv come with drawbacks. To be continued.........
