Sony Pictures Pal Joey (1957)

Sony will be releasing Pal Joey (1957) on Blu-ray on July 20th. The film was previously released by Twilight Time, and included in Mill Creek's Rita Hayworth Collection.

Quote:
Based on the hit Rodgers and Hart musical of the same name, PAL JOEY follows Joey Evans (Frank Sinatra, From Here to Eternity), a charming nightclub singer who is very popular with the chorus girls in his show. Joey has a comfortable relationship with Vera (Rita Hayworth, Gilda), a former dancer who is now a rich widow. But when Linda (Kim Novak, Vertigo) enters his life, Joey suddenly has to choose between convenience and something far more substantial.

Looks like Sony has made this and Bye, Bye Birdie part of their MOD program. Both are former Twilight Time blu-rays. What else may be coming?

Pal Joey is one of the titles in Mill Creek's Rita Hayworth Collection too.

I paid $13 for that set. Considering Sony was the source of Mill Creek's disc, how different can Sony's new $27 disc be?

Seeing the difference between the Sony release Picnic and the Twilight Time on Caps site, makes me think Twilight Time releases still may be the way to go. Too bad they are more expensive.

I found this post in the Rita Hayworth Ultimate Collection thread:

So, if true, that's the answer.

Yikes. Glad others will have a chance to get this on a disc of its own again then. I too picked up the Rita Hayworth Collection thinking I'd sell off my TT Pal Joey as to avoid duplicates, but I guess that would be a bad idea.

Is that true for Oliver! (1968) As well? I bought the 2018 Sony MOD release thinking it would probably be exactly the same or better than the twilight time release.

It wouldn't surprise me if the Sony had much better compression.

I thought about picking up the Picnic for the original poster art cover, but the compression is worse than the TT. I can't say it is for the others or will be for the others, but compression has never really been an issue in the TT titles I've picked up. Sometimes they used old and ugly masters, but at least they were technically proficient on the encoding end.

I know it is zoomed here but look at her face and the part of the siding to the left of it in the shadow.

Okay ya i see what your saying. I couldn't find any comparisons with the Sony MOD Oliver and the Twilight Time so i just went with the Sony since it was cheaper. It's going to be released in 4K in september anyways so i'm sure that release will blow both blu-ray's out of the water.

The Sony Oliver! release is a BD50 and looks almost identical to the Twilight Time release. Any film under 2hrs though, they cram onto a BD25. Sony's Bell, Book and Candle encode is horrible, especially when compared to the Twilight Time version.

I'm really disliking these older catalog Sony/Columbia releases. I'm not buying them, but it's not because I don't like the films. Sony won't know that though.

I have this set, so probably not double dipping for a MOD disc unless some new information can change my mind.

Well then I'm glad I got Picnic when it was on Twilight Time paying more for it because it was sold out.

Does anyone know if the Sony BD has any bonus features? Perhaps the DVD featurette from the Kim Novak collection? I can't seem to find what if any bonus content the new disc has. Appreciate any info.

My calculation is 78% of the rate, not 57% taking the DVDbeaver video bitrate of 32 Mbps for the TT, and 25.1 Mbps from a post in the Rita Hayworth collection thread.
