Unhappy Some more proof about why Planet Earth is selling well on HD DUD

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=955741

Author: DigitalfreakNYC

UGH!! HD confusion just hit my own family!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So I just got a call from my mom who said she ordered Planet Earth on HD DVD for my uncle for Christmas. I know he doesn't have a player because I was just at his place to make sure he set everything up right. She said he insisted he has an HD DVD player.

We made a 3way via phone and he, again, insisted he had one. When I asked what model player he had, he said Sony. I told him it was impossible but he argued that when he asked the Best Buy guy for an HD DVD player, he gave him that Sony player. When I told them Sony was 100% Blu-ray, he screamed "but players are $400!"

So now my mom cancelled the order, my uncle is pissed because he was misled...and he doesn't know what to do.

This happening to anyone else? And I can only imagine how many other people this is going to happen to this Christmas.

haha i am sorry. As bad as that story is, it is really funny. That is a bad deal but you know what, its just more proof that the NAME hd dvd is hurting their sales. They will be gone soon. No worries!

I don't know. I think it was kind of funny they sold him a Sony "HD DVD" player.

Tell him the blu-ray players aren't really more expensive when you consider spending $200 on an HD-DVD player will only get you a small fraction of movies and not for very much longer. Spending $200 on an HD-DVD player is like spending $200 playing scratch cards, except the odds are usually better on those things.

It's relevant to Blu-ray because Planet Earth is selling in huge quantites on HD DVD and is making Blu-ray look bad in comparison. We suspect a lot of them are people who do not own HD DVD players and are confused like the one referred to above. It would be nice to be able to quantify it so we know what the real situation is. Indeed it seems unlikely the confusion is limited to just this one title, and the overall movie sales ratio is probably much better for Blu-ray than suggested by the Nielsen figures.

Oprah magnified this problem 1000+ times by including Planet Earth on her Favorite Things in 2007 list.

You go it! There is NO other logical explanation why the DUD version of Planet Earth has been selling better recently then the Blu-Ray version.

The dudsters are trying to make believe it's all those new players that were purchased

Exactly it's selling huge amounts because too many people with upconverts buy it

Right there is why it is selling so well. If oprah said buy, thousands of people out there are going to buy it. Lots of people who watch oprah are also dumb, and will buy it thinking that it will play on their up convert HD (DVD) player.

I wish someone would release return %. I bet it is really high.

It seems people worry about this because they think it will affect Warner's perception of the Q4 sales numbers. But, I wonder what the affect to this perception is if the result is a large return count for Planet Earth? Returns are a very costly proposition for the retailers and the studio.

Combo-discs exist to mitigate this issue, and Warner is probably already wishing they had made Planet Earth a combo. But, as we know, combo-discs are extremely expensive to make and have had many playback problems over the last year.

I wonder what the state of the format war would be if only a combo-disc (a la Star Trek) had been released for DVD/HD DVD?

Probably about 1/2 of these PE discs will be returned because they won't play "Hi-Def" in people's DVD players. I betcha a lot of them are from people overseas as well, they can get it much cheaper here.

Better yet --> Change the Box cover to the Blu-Ray version to offset the DUD's that were sold

she informed me ( after being told to buy Blu )
that the saleman at CC sold her a HD player for $79 !!
I went crazy... a Toshi .... yuck
but
it wasn't a Toshi... it was a Samsung
hmmmm
end of story... it was an up-converting with HDMI !!
ohhhh so many people are sooooo confused !!!

That's why it's turned out the HD DVD name has not been the boon they were hoping for.

All it's done is create confusion with upconverters

agree. I am sure we all have similar stories. To me it happened a few days ago. I am guessing it was a grandmother buying for her grandkid(s). It was a crowded day and she asked "what is the blue box" someone (else) answered "it is blu-ray you need a special player", then she goes "so I should get the red one?", by that time I was near her, me and someone else said "that also needs a special player". The she replied "but it says DVD on it". And I answered " you want the black box, it is not a DVD, the red box is HD DVD and you need an HD DVD player and the blue one is Blu-ray and you need a blue ray player"

But I can easily imagine on Christmas day there will be some annoyed people that got some well intentioned presents.
