A24, via Lionsgate, will be releasing The Souvenir on August 6th. Sadly, as of right now, it appears to be another A24 title getting the BD-R treatment

Lots of critical praise for this one, however in my Sundance screening two large groups of people walked out and one man fell asleep...twice. I thought it was slow, it’s depiction of addiction cartoonish, and very self absorbed.
Sucks A24 is getting into BD-Rs. High Life was thought to be another BD-R but ended up being a pressed disc so there is still hope. |

Ok guys, heres how A24/Lionsgate's home video deal works...
It's simple- any film that A24 releases theatrically that makes OVER $1million at the US box office gets the full platform (DVD, Blu-Ray and Digital) release. Any A24 film that does NOT cross the $1million domestic gross benchmark only gets a DVD release and a Digital release. The same goes for any film A24 releases in partnership with DirectTV Cinema. With a few exceptions (HOW TO TALK TO GIRLS AT PARTIES, A PRAYER BEFORE DAWN) Now, Lionsgate obviously sees the demand for A24 films on Blu-Ray. A24 is pushing for digital over physical copies of their films (for time, money, the environment etc) but Lionsgate understands the benefit of giving the consumer, at the very least the option of Blu-Ray, which is why we are now seeing A24 titles being release on the BD-R format, made exclusively by Amazon's MOD services. This has only recently gone into effect as of, what seems like January of 2019. Some current examples: THE SOUVENIR - $928,967 total US gross. DVD only, BD-R. UNDER THE SILVER LAKE - $46,083 total US gross. DVD only, BD-R. CLIMAX - $817,339 total US gross. DVD only, BD-R. THE HOLE IN THE GROUND - $21,072 total US gross. DVD only. HIGH LIFE - $1,225,852 total US gross. DVD, Blu-Ray & Digital. GLORIA BELL - $5,611,123 total US gross. DVD, Blu-Ray & Digital. |

They should have waited a little more, then, because The Souvenir is still playing in the U.S. and is less than 100k away from hitting 1 million.

That sucks. A lot of the ones that didn't reach a million or anywhere close didn't play in any major theater chains near me (and I'm in NYC). In fact Gloria Bell and High Life are 2 of 3 of the titles there that played at AMC here, the other being Climax, which was probably limited by being so niche. I don't really get why The Souvenir was so limited, I was looking forward to checking it out.
Thankfully, The Last Black Man in San Francisco is well over a million, and should presumably get a proper BD release. |

And how much did Krisha make? Betting not nearly a million, yet A24 released a limited edition blu-ray all on their own. THIS is the avenue they should take and forego Lionsgate altogether on titles like this. |

He said it was effective likely as of Jan 2019..The data backs up what he's saying, and it is the kind of mentality that studios tend to have so I wouldn't be surprised to find it to be true.

KRISHA made $144,822 when it was released theatrically in 2016. Back then A24 had the standard deal with LGF where basically everything got a multi-platform home video release (with minor exceptions like GINGER & ROSA) KRISHA was always an oddball. Critically beloved and those whom have seen the film speak highly of it. I personally loved it. To this date there has never been an official physical release of the film except for the A24 manufactured, limited to 100 copies, Blu-Ray they released on their site. One would think a barebones DVD would have at least hit the market, but no. My buddy wasn't with them until last year and he couldn't even tell me what happened to KRISHA. (Which sucks because I would love to own a physical copy of the film- not just the Digital release) And no, A24 will never independently make and release their own physical copies of their films. One, because it's simply too expensive, and Two - LGF and A24 are under contract. It is discouraging that LGF and say, Saban Films, have a deal where every crappy film they release ends up on Blu-Ray and not A24, but such is the business of Hollywood. FYI, A24 is funded by a grant from the Guggenheim- which could also help explain why they are so picky and choosey about how they treat their films regardless of what the fans and consumers want. It's a set amount of money they work with and it obviously has to be used very carefully. This is also why A24 is one of the only indie studios today that is able to turn a profit. |

Thanks for the info. I have a signed copy of that Krisha Blu, too. I'm holding onto that for forever. Great film. I can only hope that when the A24/Lionsgate home-release license expires, A24 negotiates a better contract with a company that gives a s#!t about not only getting things out on proper physical media, but also a company that cares about extras, and artwork that doesn't look like it's been done by a 4th grader. The majority of Lionsgate films have the worst artwork. So many floating heads.

Does anybody have information regarding whether this might actually be not only BD-R, as it has actually crossed the one million threshold in its US gross as of mid July?

Well it comes out in 5 days and doesn’t appear to be available to pre-order anywhere. So maybe there’s a chance?
