Default How much do amazon rankings factor in?

Hi all,
Just wondering if the amazon rankings matter at all...how much of a percentage of all HDM sales are from them?

http://charts.highdefdigest.com/rank.aspx

Just curious cuz Bourne exclusive box set is currently beating POTC3 in terms of sales rank there.

Personally, I did buy some from Amazon BOGO's but other bd's I also bought from elsewhere.

PS: And i'm not worried or anything, just curious. Blu Ray is still kicking butt

HD DVD always does a lot better on amazon then it does at B&M stores and other sites. Blu-ray managed to win a few weeks by a huge margins even when HD DVD was selling like crazy on amazon. Remember that Best Buy still moves more Blu-rays/ HD DVDs than any other retailer.

Pirates was released a week earlier, that might have something to do with it... Is the rank based on the number sold for the current week? or since release?

It can't be since release because then 300 would always be #1.

In that case, the fact that Pirates 3 was released a week earlier must be the reason for the rank issue.

Thanks, that kinda answered my question (that amazon's not the biggest retailer distributor of HDM). Is there a site with all these numbers from all retailers? Or are they just pieced together from different sources?

They don't.
Amazon rankings are an idiotic metric that will drive you insane if you focus on them.

Agreed, Neilson numbers are far more important and are what industry decision makers will be paying attention to.

LOL that may be true. I found this site trying to explain how the rankings work for books...i'm kinda confused

Yeah ok I think my question's answered: take the rankings only with a grain of salt. It can be a trend guide, but nothing like the Nielsen numbers.

Amazon also factors in pre-orders when you look at their lists; however, those titles don't count for the Nielsen's until they actually ship. So, all that movement up and down their charts means very little until the titles actually ship out the door and get counted.

Funny thing is the week Die Hard 4 released all the HD fanboys were saying how they probably won their first week because they quoted all these Amazon charts how HD is outperforming BR titles overall.

They lost 72 to 28 lol.

Ignore Amazon, it's a lesson red ants learned the hard way.

In addition to the faults pointed out already above, Amazon makes up less than 10% of HDM sales. And, I totally forgot my source for that information right now; however, I think someone else linked it in the Neilsen thread at one time.

I would not be concerned about Amazon's sales ranks at all.

Just be happy. The war is about to end in a couple/few weeks and we can all get on with our lives viewing _all_ HighDef content in full 1080p with lossless audio on Blu-ray.

It's not as high as the Spiderman 3 trilogy got (which was more expensive), and POTC3 is a week older and yet ahead of the Ultimatum single.

Box sets tend to shine on Amazon because they are priced so nicely, and they are much harder to find at B&M. Despite the Bourne Amazon Trilogy having always been ahead on Amazon, I expect like Spiderman, Die Hard the actual overall sales from all sources will be that the single sold FAR more.

Harry Potter box is 78 on Blu and ahead of the HD DVD OOTP single. There is no way that box set will sell anywhere close to the numbers of the HD DVD single when all sellers are counted. It would be nice if it did. That would pretty much bury HD DVD.

I stopped looking at them a few weeks ago, because they are so FAR off of from what the actual numbers are. They could kill us all week on Amazon, and then the numbers will come out, and we have killed them, so, no comparison.

two very different questions

do they matter? no because they have 0 information , a 10 point difference in ranking might be 1 (or less) copy or 1,000,000 (or more) copies

how much of a percentage of all HDM sales are from them? my guess around 20%-30%
