United Kingdom Tales Out Of School: Four Plays by David Leland (July 2011)

Big fan of Leland's work so this is a must buy.

Birth Of A Nation: Featuring Jim Broadbent

Flying Into The Wind

R.H.I.N.O.

Made In Britain: Directed by Alan Clarke, Tim Roth

Nice to see Alan Clarke's (of Scum fame) work getting on to Blu-ray too, I hope we have much more soon.

This is out of left field a bit! Bravo Network, as I thought they were only doing the posh shows like The Avengers or Danger Man. Nice to see some independent-types getting their due on BD as well.

Now if only ITV could sell the rights to Cracker--though if necessary, they can keep that abomination they did in 2006--so that a studio like Network could pick THAT up. Fitz in HD would be a sight indeed.

EDIT: Also, ITV, Inspector Morse is perhaps your most well-regarded series of the past 25 years, and in 2008 you release it "remastered" on DVD...from the 1-inch tape masters?! Tell me you didn't bin 60 hours of quality (and posh) TV films.

Has anyone picked this up yet? I'll definitely be getting it at some point but am very curious about the PQ.

Some well written and detailed reviews there too.

£12.59 http://www.play.com/DVD/Blu-ray/4-/1...-/Product.html

That's the cheapest I've ever seen it and it's time to invest.

Picture quality is very poor by today's standards. But who cares when a quartet of tv movies is this good. I know that made in Britain is the famous one here, but it really is eclipsed by the truly outstanding birth of a nation. This is an essential blu ray package.

As in 3D, CGI-filled and shot on HD video? Not sure what you mean by that but it sounds ignorant as the image is pretty amazing to me. The image is what it is. It would be no different now if the same filming/production tools were used today.

Fab price too.

Don't really know anything about these, but it was always a set I was interested in. Might wait for a further price drop first though.

I really enjoyed it, I've seen all of the films a couple of times now, but Birth of a Nation (no, not that one...) is the highlight for me. Tricky to say if it's worth £15.99. I got mine for a tenner in one of Network's 40% off sales, which was a bargain.

Watching this for the first time today, and while Made in Britain and Birth of a Nation both look great, I am having trouble getting into Flying Into the Wind due to the massive digital artifacts. Between films the prints look about equal, but spot-checking the video bitrate reveals an average of only 5mb/s for this one (compared to ~20mb/s for the others) even while the LPCM @ 2mb/s level from the others is maintained. Doing the math, 4-hours on a BD-50 should have been ~24mb/s average over the three plays on disc one. Sad really, because somebody clearly fell asleep at the controls here.

Watched Birth Of A Nation this evening after purchasing the set last week.

Strange film, what was the deal with some of the teachers getting off on giving pupils the slipper? And the cat eating the rabbit at the end?

Also to anyone else that has the set what is your favorite? Alan Clarkes Made In Britain is meant to be a good film.
