Default New 4K User Question

Hi, I just started getting into 4K and bought myself a Samsung 4K Smart TV and a Panasonic DP-UB450. Even with 4K discs so far I'm still having the same types of issues I had with when I used to play regular discs which is I still get noticeable pixelated white dot static in any dark scenes. Any idea what is causing this?

My first guess would be HDMI cable issues.
Are you using a Premium Certified cable for 18 Gbps data transfer?

If not, Monoprice or others are available via Amazon for under $10 for 6ft.
Don’t be taken in by high prices for cables.

Could also be your tv, but I have no experience with Samsungs.

If you encounter an issue where you are unable to output a 4K HDR signal to your TV, and the settings on your UHD BD player appear to be correct, you may need to configure your TV's HDMI input to properly accept 4K HDR signals.

Samsung TVs

Samsung refers to this setting as HDMI UHD Color, and it is typically found in the Samsung menu under Settings / Picture / Expert Settings / HDMI UHD Color. Please ensure that this is set to On for the HDMI input your OPPO player is connected to.
The specific name that Samsung uses changes - but you need to make sure the TV HDMI input you are using connected to the player has been enabled for 4K HDR.

The UHD player outputs at 2160P or 4K@24hz normally for UHD BD's, you use the defaults usually with the player unless it defaults to 1080P video output.

My TV is: Samsung TU7100 Crystal UHD 4K HDR Smart TV.

I have no idea what options I should have selected and which I shouldn't. I tried a different HDMI cable but same issue.

Rtings also has a pretty good guide as to how to calibrate your set. You should check them out. https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/sa...u7000/settings

Dark scenes often exhibit more grain or noise, sharpness adds edge enhancement to each one of those little fellas to point where it can look like it's snowing.

Sharpness needs to be at 0.

Yep I've noticed. Boy have I noticed with Ghostbusters 4K. Take the scene where Peter and Ray meet Egon in the library at the beginning. There's so much static dancing around you don't even need to pause to see it.

As it stands now without any more changes it's not perfect but turning the sharpness down on both and the player and the TV has cut half of that static out. It's still nowhere as smooth as it could be.

I currently have my Samsung TV set to Standard but I know that guide by rtings said I should choose Movie. Not sure if that cuts out the static.

One other thing: I spent three or four hours with Panasonic and then Samsung tech support via live chat to see what could be done with this static issue. He said that my TV is capable of outputting to 50/60p yet when I try to select the option my 4K blu-ray player says it can't. Why can it not detect the higher p? I leave it on 24p. Is that okay?

It should be in Movie mode, turn all post-processing off and make sure it's on Warm 2.

Movies do have grain, it's unavoidable unless you or the master filters it out, but as long as you don't add edge enhancement it should be a nice filmic look (something 4K excels at).

Not sure, what model is your TV? It will either be native 60Hz or 120Hz in most cases. You shouldn't have a problem outputting 60Hz, but 24Hz is fine for movies. It won't output 4K(50p/60p) if Automatic and 4K are selected Picture>Video Format settings or there's a cable issue.

But there isn't really any need to not output 24p unless the UHD is encoded in 60p (which only a few are).

Yeah I don't have access to 50p/60p. My TV is the Samsung TU7100 Crystal UHD 4K HDR Smart TV.

So does having it on Standard cause issues? The problem with Movie is that unless adjustments are made it looks very gold.

Movie will look warmer as it's more accurate than the much cooler standard modes, too bright with too much sharpness will look funky.

I'd recommend switch to Movie mode, Warm 2 and turn the sharpness off and leave it there.

Make sure you have the 'Input Signal Plus" Set to "On" and change the Player's Settings to 4:2:2 or 4:2:0. Apparently, your TV cannot do 10 bit content on the 4:4:4 setting.

Okay I took your advice and switched to those settings but I find the picture lacks contrast and brightness. HDR thanks to my new cable allows me to bright up the picture thankfully but getting colours looking saturated is a problem. Is there a way to keep these settings but add more saturation bearing in mind a lot of these options are disabled when the player is on?

It's probably something that you'll get used to if you want the most accurate picture. You can post your picture settings and we'll take a look to see if anything stands out.

One thing I have noticed is that when a disc is inserted it's impossible to change the settings on my TV. It has to be done before the movie is played otherwise certain settings like picture size and temperature cannot be accessed for changing.

Are the BDs or UHDs? if they're the latter and you're in HDR mode, some picture options will be disabled.

I don't think I have to be in HDR mode in order to have the options disabled.
