I've recently compiled a list of my all time favourite 100 films for no reason other than that I am a little pretentious and a compulsive list maker, but in the process of doing this I came across one film that I have never ever failed to include -- One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. This was perhaps the first time that I gave the choice some serious consideration and I've come to the realisation that One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, whilst still a very compelling work, is not one of my favourite films of all time. It's not terribly important that I articulate the reasons why, I just know that I've owned the DVD since forever and yet I've only been compelled to play it a handful of times. This is not a film I revisit too often and I distinctly remember growing a little bored of it through the second act the last time I sat down to watch it in its entirety. The ending is unforgettably bleak too with some of the characters we become most endeared to suffering terrible fates. Other films that have gone down in my estimation over time would be There Will Be Blood, Stand By Me and Into the Wild.
So how about you guys, what are some of the films that have gone down in your estimation over time? ![]() |

Brainscan. I watched it with my mom when I was very young and for more than 10 years I couldn't remember what this movie was called. I was always looking for it in stores and on TV. Never catched it again until one night. I couldn't sleep and it was on TV late at night. Probably around 3 in the morning or so. I was glued to the TV and I was sure I have seen this movie but couldn't quite correlate it. Then when a certain scene came along I knew this was the movie I remembered and was constantly looking for. I loved it to death once I re-disovered it. Then when I watched it again with some friends and I told them how awesome this movie was, I realised that it's pretty much only the first 30 minutes that are amazing. The rest is good but nothing spectactular. It still holds a special place in my heart, though.

There are way too many to list and this is reflected significantly in my collecting habits.
I used to own ~3,500 DVDs and BDs (compulsion was a big part of it) and now I own less than 200 and I'm reducing it even further. Part of it is getting older, the other is fatigue with collecting. However, I've learned that many films do not have high replay value for me and that there are very few films that I truly love and cannot live without. |

Recently it's been Captain America: Civil War. I loved it initially, I thought it was the best Marvel film, maybe even the best superhero film of all time. Now it's not even in my top 10. I still think that it's a very good movie, just not the masterpiece I thought it was.

The Dark Knight Rises. Funnily enough, I think the overall story is good - i's just the pacing and tone are way off in that movie for some reason. Plus, after what an amazing streak of excellent movies from Christopher Nolan had been going on for me (from Batman Begins to Inception), I had sky high expectations. On top of that, in hindsight, I thought the trailers had shown too much of the movie.
At least he was able to (mostly) bounce back with Interstellar and I'm quite interested to see what he has next with Dunkirk. Last edited by The Debts; 10-23-2016 at 11:43 PM. |

I hesitate to list mine because it reflects a handful that are wildly beloved!
![]() I think the following are all well-made and impactful films but they have kinda "worn thin" on me over the years... The Shining 1980 Halloween 1978 The Graduate 1967 On the reverse end, some films just get better and better with time and I continually get fresh angles, subtleties, or viewpoints from them... The Exorcist 1973 Vertigo 1958 La Dolce Vita 1960 Citizen Kane 1941 |

It's rare that I completely go off a film I once loved but a recent example was Victor Victoria. Watched it several times when it came out and then a few more times on TV. When I recently revisited it on Blu-ray after a long time, I barely made it to the end. Everybody looks a couple of decades too old for their parts, the songs and musical numbers are far from great and the film runs out of steam half way through and is way too long. I couldn't sell it fast enough.

![]() ![]() I get tired of movies, but it always circles back around. I may watch something a lot, get sick of it and a few years later it will be my favorite thing again. I'm far from the norm tho. I may have a DVD I watched once in 2003 and randomly pick it up one day and watch it again and it become a new favorite. 18 yr old me and 31 yr old me may view something different, in this fictional situation, and that's why I never write off a movie after the luster has worn off. An example that has happened would be Shawshank Redemption. I wasn't a fan when I saw it as a young kid in 1994 and never really gave it any thought. Jump forward twenty years and it became a favorite of mine, even so far as I met a lot of the cast at the Mansfield Reformatory where some of it was filmed during an anniversary screening. Opinions change with age, and sometimes everything circles back around. I can't watch The Hobbit anymore because I have seen it 100+ times but I know in a few months or so I'll end up seeing one of them and still enjoying it. I'm rambling...lol |

you may be a bit ![]() this is why I love having a big library in my collection.. you are exactly right-- some movies may grow tiresome but you want to see them again years later, some titles you may not have liked originally but you do after watching it again, etc etc This is why I just don't get people having a fit if they have a blu ray in their collection that they don't immediately love or want to watch 100 times... "oh no, I have to sell it because it doesn't have huge replay value"! ![]() lol, now I'm rambling! |

Watchmen
Thought it was fantastic on first watch. Since then, not so much. The movie had potential but there is just something off about the movie. |

Usually stuff I saw in my early teens that I thought was "the best thing ever made ever".
Fight Club American Beauty Clerks American History X Boondock Saints (the most embarrassing ![]() Those are the first that spring to mind. None of those, except for Boondock Saints, are bad by any means, just not anywhere near my favorites. |
