I saw this last night, and I really enjoyed it. I consider The Devil's Rejects to be a great film, and this is Rob Zombie's second best. Mini review:
Rob Zombie's very own The Hunger Games. I must say, I am quite surprised. This is his best film since The Devil's Rejects, and honestly, his second best work to date. There is a lot to love. The cinematography is filmic and reminded me of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. The structure of the movie lends it self to repeat viewing. The killers are all unique and memorable, akin to video game boss fights. The choice of music is wonderful, fits the film, and I imagine being Rob Zombie gives you a bit more options in that department. It's not perfect by any means, and the third act has a couple of issues, but overall I am thoroughly impressed with this effort. If you are not a Rob Zombie fan, don't waste your time. Even though I dislike most of his films, I think he always offers something unique to the genre, which is why I always look forward to his next work. If you go into this without an open mind, with a preconceived intention to hate it, then don't bother. |

i hate when they review the bluray based on their opinion of the film. i mean take a half point off if you don't like it but basing your entire score of the product on your opinion of the film is stupid

That's what reviews are. One persons opinion. How else is someone supposed to review something if they can't state their opinion?

i think when reviewing the product they should include their personal opinion of the movie but in terms of giving it a score, it should have little impact of their score |

I just skimmed the review really fast, but it sounded pretty fair to me. What I can't stand is when someone reviews a horror movie who isn't a fan of horror movies (the L.A. Times has pulled this a few times). I don't want to know if someone thinks the genre is disgusting. I want to know if someone who appreciates the genre will appreciate the movie. And this review seemed to follow the latter template. It sounds like it's a polarizing movie even for Rob Zombie fans, so I'm okay with it. Hopefully, mine will arrive soon and I can decide for myself (I'm a backer and have been holding out on seeing it until I get my copy).

Not good weird like the works of David Lynch, but weird in a rather underwhelming way. Zombie really wanted to do an artsy horror film, but fumbled considerably. 31 was a step up from Lords of Salem, but still rather lacking compared to Zombie's best films. |

I seen before Zombie claimed the release would include an unrated version, and the listing here also said two cuts were included, now it's changed to just the rated version. Did the unrated version get cut from the release? I didn't buy it on Vudu when it was on sale, thinking they would add an unrated version once it was released. Maybe I should have ordered the rated one then.

As a backer, I'm pretty disappointed that there is no uncut version. I'm happy to have the autographed Bluray, but I backed this under the impression that Rob was asking for money to retain his "artistic integrity." Then he goes and sells the movie to Lionsgate and cuts out whatever the MPAA had problems with. I doubt we'll ever get the movie uncut. And the sad part about all of this is that 31 is just...okay. It looks and sounds good, but it feels fairly cheap (it was) and the dialogue is pretty lacking. I might be one of the few who thought Lords of Salem was a huge step in the right direction for Zombie as a filmmaker, but with 31 he's back to his safe zone of hillbillies screaming obscenities at each other and the camera convulsing wildly during kills. Actually, I'm not too sure an uncut version would make it better.
