Blu-ray Grand Duke

Let me tell you a story. I received my first blu ray player Christmas 2009 and that is when i began my collection. As of today 8 May 2015 i am on my 8th blu ray player. That's right, in the last 5 years i have had 7 blu ray players break on me. At first i was spending quite a bit on them, but obviously as they kept breaking i figured it made more sense to get cheaper ones. A couple of years ago i took out an extended warranty so whenever my player breaks, i can get a replacement immediately. The longest any of them lasted was less than a year, probably 10-11 months maximum, the shortest was an unbelievable 2 and a half weeks! It was player no. 7 that only lasted 2 and a half weeks. So i guess i just wanted to rant. I personally put this down to a curse against technology that i must have. People tell me it's just bad luck but it seems too consistent to be just bad luck and perhaps i am a little superstitious. I've owned Sony (broke), Panasonic (broke), Toshiba x2 (broke, broke) Samsung x4 (broke, broke, broke i hope this new doesn't!). No matter what brand i get and no matter how much i spend, they just break. Now i do have a huge blu ray library so the players get plenty of use but i work full time so it's not like i'm using them all day every day. Does anyone else have any similar stories or bad luck with blu ray players? Perhaps stuff just isn't built to last but to me 8 players in 5 years is absolutely and completely ludicrous.

I bought a Magnavox from Wal-Mart several years back (I'm thinking maybe four). It was my first and, so far, only blu-ray player. I updated the firmware once (maybe three years back). So far it has played everything that I have put into it. From what I understand Philips now owns Magnavox and distributes under various brands. If I was to purchase again, I would look for a similar one.

You must have bad luck.
"Drive devices" I've owned over the years counts into the hundreds(car stereo, computer included). Off the top of my head... 3 head units have died(typically you have to feed the disc numerous times till it plays)...2 of those were in the vehicle when bought...so "weren't mine" at first. Of those 3, only 1 really died...I just got tired of the loading issue and replaced. Computer. Never had "the drive" fail. CD players. 1 died(wouldn't turn on one day) another would skip if music was played loudly to where it was a vibration issue. DVD. I don't think one has ever died on me. BD. Same. I've actually sold 9(I have 13* now. Have had close to 30). I probably have 8 sitting collecting dust. *All 13 are multi region. 12 LG and 1 Orei. I replaced(added another 3) all in a 15 month period. |

I think there's a need for a quality surge suppressor or UPS when I hear stories like this. I use Furman, Tripp Lite, APC, CyberPower, and Middle Atlantic products between everything I plug into the wall and have had no such problems.

I have to say it sounds like bad luck. I've only had one player have any problems and that was right out of the box with a Samsung. Since I started with my blu ray collection in 2009 I've owned 3 PS3's, 4 Sony's, 1 Insignia, 1 LG, 1 Panasonic, and 2 Samsung's. Between all of them the one DOA Samsung has been the only problem I've seen.

That was my first thought when I read the OPs post. My 3 players are all 5+ years old and all connected to Cyberpower UPS.

I honestly don't even know what this means! I have it plugged into a four way socket that has a surge suppressor in it but being from the UK i am not familiar with the above names.

Wow! That's unbelievable!
I have had one BD player, not counting my BD Rom drive, since 2009. I just recently had to replace the loader, since the Blu-ray laser had died, but that's it. No problems with my amazing Oppo BDP-83 SE. Are you sure you, or other members of your family, don't play frisbee or something with the players? ![]() If not, I feel very sorry for your troubles. |

My first two players were Samsung and they died a little over a year after I bought them. After that I bought two sonys (a region free and a plain old player) the standard player is over 2 years old now and the region free is a year old. I will never buy a Samsung player again. I am a heavy user though. No cable and rarely use Netflix/Amazon prime/hbo go so the player is always on.
I had too many DVD players to count break. |

I've been using a Sony BDP-S780 in my Family Room since 2011. It's a very reliable Blu-ray Player. I was using a Sony BDP-1700ES in my Home Theater Room since 2010 and it too was very reliable. Recently I upgraded my Home Theater Room AVR and Blu-ray Player and am now using a Oppo BDP-105D. It's built like a tank and is a solid performer.

Sorry yeah, in every single instance they stopped reading the blu ray discs. They would still turn on etc. they just stopped running the discs themselves.

To keep all the new electronics working proper, a few things are worth while.
~Surge Protector, not a 4$ strip, but a nice one. APC, Monster, Tripp ~Good Ventilation, allow for breathing room on your shelf, no setting on carpet ~Keep it clean, inside and out. Dust it off weekly on the outside, run Blu-ray lens cleaner disc once and a while. I live in FL, USA, power here is a mfer. Constant flickering, frequent outages, I honestly had better power supplies in a few 3rd world countries when I worked internationally. It plays h*ll on the equipment, so I do strongly believe in proper surge prevention. The air here is filthy, wash my car and once its dry and sitting in the garage, by time Im back, its got dust and sediment all over, its in the air, all the sand. Keep things dusted, blow out the venting on your stuff with canned air too. Since Ive done these things, its been better. |
