United Kingdom The Lords of Flatbush (1974)

https://101-films-store.myshopify.co...-flatbush-1974

So nice to see this flick finally released. Weirdly enough, in the UK and not yet in the US.
No matter, I've been waiting for its release for years, so I'd have gotten it from anywhere

Not a masterpiece, but, for some reason, I always loved it.

It's terrible. I bought it and sold it.

Terrible in what way, an upscale, some beat up print, bad mastering?

Possibly an upscale. Has a weird VHS like quality from what I remember. I would suggest waiting. It isn't even passable as an "okay for now" transfer.

I have it on DVD and that was similar.

Hmmm disappointing to hear. I'll wait for it to drop below £10, Paradise Alley didn't take too long.

Yeah, PQ is a letdown. I'm not really sure it doesn't even improve on the previous DVD edition, though. I'd like to dig out the DVD disc for a comparison, but tracking that down would be quite the endeavor

Sony didn't tout a new remaster/restoration.

I'm seriously tempted of getting the Sony disc. Believe it or not, is one of my favorite flicks. But I'm afraid the transfer's gonna be the same as on the 2020 UK BD...
Any info on how it looks?
...Nevermind. Ordered.

Sony US review is online
The Lords of Flatbush Blu-ray - Sony Pictures | 1974 | 84 min | Rated PG | Dec 31, 2024

The fact that the film was shot in 16mm - which I was unaware of - explains the disc's constraints. I would be curious to know if the 2020 101 Films UK Blu-ray is different or exactly the same. I'll have to go and retrieve it.

At least that looks like film.

I find the review balanced. I like how the Blu-ray looks and, in the absence of a proper restoration, it's impossible it could look any better. I'm just intrigued to compare it with the 101 Films release (but I can't find it!

Edward Lachman said he just did a new remaster of this from the negative on the Roger Deakins podcast.

Got my copy of the US Sony disc finally, it still looks rough, but definitely from a film source not video. Not sure it's from the negative though, looks rather 16mm, and dingy in dark scenes.

Wasn't this shot in 16mm to begin with?

Yeah you're right, just seen the tech specs on iMdb. The BD is way better than my old DVD, so worth the upgrade.
