1. Sports movies
2. Westerns 3. Horror films For some reason, whenever I see in the theater or rent one of these films, they seem to never disappoint. Im not a huge fan of any of those three genres but the majority of these films have always been satisfying. I have seen a few bad westerns and few bad horror films but I have not seen one bad sports film and I dont even care about watching sports in real life Which film genres rarely disappoint you...and remember they can be film genres that you dont love dearly (for example, I love animated films, Musicals, sci-fi, superhero movies... yet they arent always as consistently reliable entertainers). |

To be completely honest, the only genre which has (so far) been 100% guaranteed success for me in my history of film viewing has been Marvels Cinematic Universe. Every other genre has always had entries of dissapointing note.
That being said, I am prepared for the eventual day where even that one very specific genre fails me as well. I can only hope that it is still a far ways off though. ![]() |

It's not really a genre but I would probably say low-budget indie character films have a pretty good track record for me. They're like anything else...the really good ones are few and far between but I usually find something to like about them (if only that they were at least trying something more or less interesting).
I finally got around to watching Hesher the other night and was kind of surprised by how much I disliked it. That's a pretty rare reaction. I wasn't necessarily crazy about (for example) Safety Not Guaranteed or Everything Must Go but there were things I really liked about them. |

I was just reading the films people were listing in The Judge giveaway and that got me to thinking. Courtroom Dramas might be a legitimate genre with a great track record too.
I love the great ones. I love a lot of the pretty good ones and I even like a lot of the just okay ones. |

Probably westerns. Even with bad ones, you know you will have certian things in it. With others, the bad can be bad - comedies can have very lame jokes, horror can be not so scary, etc - and that will totally ruin the film.

Thrillers, Crime Dramas, and Neo-noir are my favorites.
Genres are hard because I love so many things about each of them. I'd say just about every single genre has a balanced chance of satisfying me. I naturally try to avoid silly action blockbusters and rom-coms. |

Samurai (jidai-geki) films for me. Most may not have the hyper-kinetic action scenes like 13 Assassins or Kill Bill. But a lot of them deal with themes of honor amidst class struggles, revenge and social codes.

Slasher flicks rarely disappoint me.
Now, I'm not sure if that's because most of them are at least somewhat entertaining, or because I just don't bother with the ones which I don't think I like. It's probably a combination of the two, actually. Super-hero movies have been fairly reliable, with only a few exceptions (Spider-Man 3, Iron-Man 3, Superman Returns, X-Men Origins: Wolverine). But the vast majority have been good-to-excellent. |
