Default Ghost in the Shell (2017)

Quote:
EXCLUSIVE: DreamWorks has made a deal with Snow White And The Huntsman helmer Rupert Sanders to direct Ghost In The Shell, a live action film based on the Japanese manga futuristic police thriller that has a new script from William Wheeler. The film is being produced by Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Steven Paul. Fueled by the personal passion of Steven Spielberg, DreamWorks acquired the project several years ago with ambitious plans to shoot it in 3D.

Ghost in the Shell was first published in 1989 by Kodansha, one of the largest publishing companies in Japan. It went on to generate two additional manga editions, three anime film adaptations, an anime TV series and three videogames. DreamWorks released the second anime film.

The story follows the exploits of a member of a covert ops unit of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission that specializes in fighting technology-related crime.

Wheeler scripted Hoax and The Reluctant Fundamentalist, and most recently completed the Robert Schwentke-attached serial killer Entering Hades for New Regency as well as Queen of Katwe, a true story about a young female chess prodigy from Africa, that has Reluctant Fundamentalist helmer Mira Nair attached. The Anonymous Content-repped scribe also scripted Brand, a USA Network project that has Jodie Foster attached to direct.

Sanders has several directing projects percolating, and it isn’t clear which film he’ll next helm. He’s got 90 Church with Universal and producer Joe Roth, an epic about the bloody battles of Napoleon Bonaparte at Warner Bros, and he’s developing Juliet for Sony and New Regency, with Charles Roven producing, as well as the screen adaptation of the Frederick Forsyth thriller The Kill List for producers Steve Schwartz, Paula Mae Schwartz and Nick Wechsler. Sanders is represented by CAA and attorney Carlos Goodman.

They're gonna white-wash the sh-t out of this. I just know it. Like the proposed Akira. And like Akira, it will fall apart at a later stage.

Snow White and the Huntsman? Don't you mean "Snow White and Hollywood's Dreadful Attempt To Pander The Game Of Thrones Fanbase"? For Christ sakes, we didn't even see Charlize Theron naked!

I love the entire GITS universe and have seen everything except the prequel TV series. This could be great or it could be awful! It's key that they get Motoko right! That means no Kristen Stewart!

That would be cool, although I hope Kikuchi doesn't end up typecast exclusively in genre roles. Asian actors have a hard enough time in Hollywood as it is.

I'd go with Ron Perlman for Batou.

I really hope this doesn't happen, or at least get a different director. I have no faith in this director at all.

Hollywood adapting anime/manga series have not been good at all.

Blood: Last Vampire
Dragon Ball: Evolution
Fist of the Northstar
Speed Racer

is there more?

Only Hollywood adaptation that I might have been excited for would have been James Cameron's adaptation of Battle Angel, but that will probably never happen. Also it was kind of done already with Elysium anyway.(which was a disappointment - I was keep thinking how awesome it would have been if they made Battle Angel instead)

If you had to pick a director for this movie, who would you go for?

Darren Aronofsky, The Wachowski Brothers, Tom Tykwer, Garreth Edwards, Danny Boyle, Neil Blomkamp, David Fincher, David Cronenberg or hell, Mamoru Oshii himself could do a much better job than the guy that made Snow White And The Huntsman.

Personally, my #1 choice would be David Fincher. (but I would rather him work on the rest of the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo sequels)

Ridley Scott would be another choice I would be excited about. (I would rather have him stop working on Blade Runner sequel and do something else - rather want him to work on Prometheus sequel than playing around with Blade Runner)

Guillermo del Toro would be another good choice. Or go with total mind trip version with David Lynch.

There are just so many other directors that are capable of doing better than Snow White director.

Agreed 1000% on Neil Blomkamp, I think he should be the one to do GITS....it is, what it is...
Unfortunately, I disagree with Aronofsky and Fincher (I think Fincher's sworn off sci-fi movies right?), but I can see someone like the Wachowski siblings (I don't care what you say, the other is now a girl) doing a good job too!

I'd would have liked to have seen Fincher do it. I'd like to see the movie have a sense of noir to it and I think Fincher could tap into that.

I'd still like to have that sense of noir despite the fact that Fincher isn't doing the movie. I think that would help make the movie more like Blade Runner and less like The Matrix.

Why is this moving forward and Akira stays on constant back burner?
