A new Spike Lee documentary on the early part of MJ's career. Something nice to go along with the Bad 25 Bluray. It's being released on DVD and Bluray, but so far it looks like it's only packaged with the Off The Wall album. Time will tell if it will be sold separately.

Very interested in this. As a kid, I had "The Making of Thriller", "Moonwalker", and "Michael Jackson: The Legend Continues" on one videotape and I wore that sucker out. The thing that confused me though was why there was virtually nothing between Jackson's childhood, up until his solo career. Everything from 1973-1978 was almost completely missing in those specials.
Granted, thanks to the internet, there's a whole wealth of videos from those years now, be it the Jackson's variety hour, live performances (Soul Train comes to mind), and various interviews and awards clips. But it's gonna be great to finally have something official. I know Spike will do MJ proud. **Edit** If this sells well, I really hope they do some official blu releases of some full concerts from '78-'84. Now there's stuff that really needs to get out there. And again, a wealth of it on youtube, but it needs to be remastered. |

Without knowing the specifics of Michael Jackson's videos, I would guess just about the entire MTV era of music video - was either shot on video or "edited" on video. This includes music videos and concert performance. 16mm concert films were somewhat rare, and 35mm films were extremely rare. Most of that stuff was instead all shot on video tape, and forever stuck in NTSC format (VHS/DVD). There are exceptions though, and it looks like Thriller was definitely shot on 35mm (it was even screened theatrically as a short film). Last edited by AgentOrange; 02-17-2016 at 03:57 PM. |

While it’s true that most music videos from the MTV heyday are stuck at 480i due to being edited on video. MJ is an exception in some cases because a few of his videos went to festivals and a lot of the Bad videos were apart of the Moonwalker film. These exceptions went through the entire typical film post production process of the day, meaning edited on film.
Thriller and Bad (long version) were screened theatrically for festivals and award consideration and have a film master. Moonwalker is currently available on Blu from Europe and looks great, the excellent Smooth Criminal (full version) video looks awesome! Stan Winston’s GHOSTS short film was also finished on film for theatrical presentation and has been broadcast in HD in some international markets, but it’s an older master and may well be an up convert. Even at that, the pre Dangerous videos (That were shot on film, a few were shot on video) would be easily reconstructed in HD if the original elements could be found, (Except Billie Jean which uses 80’s cheese video transistions, but that’s not hard to mimic) most of these videos feature standard cut/edits that could be redone in an afternoon. It’s the Dangerous/HIStory era videos that pose a problem as they used a lot of “modern” video/computer effects of the day and those effects would have to be recreated. I’ve always said if they were going to do this, they should do it now while those video’s directors are still alive so they can oversee the process. |
