Default Cinema Paradiso Blu-ray (Lionsgate 10/14/11) Review

Cinema Paradiso Blu-ray

Cinema Paradiso Blu-ray Review

I could be wrong, but this hasn't been release on Blu-ray in America, right?

Cover art and technical details.

For those who have never seen it — and those who have never forgotten it — director Giuseppe Tornatore’s (MALENA, THE STAR MAKER) cherished Academy Award®-winning motion picture (1990, Best Foreign Language Film) is now fully restored, digitally remastered, and includes 51 minutes of never-before-seen footage!

Details aren't too clear. Does this contain both versions? It lists the runtime as 95 min but mentions the 51 minutes of footage.

Excellent, and likely at a good price as well.

Yeah, I really want the director's cut! That add is misleading, it says "51 extra minutes" but then for details it lists the film as being 95 minutes long. And for $15 I'm not sure we'll get the long version... Fingers crossed though...

A def buy for me, I was going to buy the UK release but the poor review put me off, hopefully now with a restored edition it will look great.

What poor review? The UK disc got pretty good reviews as I recall. It's only real flaw was the absence of the director's cut.

A case where the theatrical cut is superior to the director's cut.

I hate the director's cut, but the original theatrical cut is a masterpiece. Thankfully the UK import is the original cut, if this was the DC I wouldn't get it and would be upset.

I far prefer the director's cut which makes the story much more emotional and complete.

I like both, but agree the Directors cut is more complete and emotional. Not sure how anyone could 'hate' it?

Terrible, terrible cover though - neither cover does the film any justice. Why not the usual picture of young boy looking at the film reel?

The "Director's Cut" is the original theatrical cut. This is a case where the movie was trimmed for the attention span of American audiences. It took us years to get the filmed released in America with the actual cut of the movie. I really hope they don't ruin that buy reissuing the cut version. Either way I'll buy because I love this film but I hope they get it right.

It's the original poster art that's fine by me. At least they didn't give us some terrible photoshop job.

The release info is a little confusing but it does say the above in the description so we may be in luck.

Are Lionsgate BD's usually region free or locked? If this has the longer cut and is region free then I'm definitely importing it!

I know, but it was always a bad poster that does the brilliance of the film no favours at all! Oh well!

FINALLY!

Whatever "cut" it is, it's better than no cut...
