I grew up with the classics on VHS, like Alice and Wonderland and Peter Pan. As such, those hold a special place in my heart. I was also a child when the Disney Renaissance period began, so I love those films too. My favorites are The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and Tarzan.

Pinocchio by a long, long, long shot. Just watch the scene with all the clocks on the wall. The amount of detail there is staggering. The Monstro attack, Pleasure Island, even when Pinocchio is trapped in the cage while the cart is moving is incredibly detailed.
The only other film I have seen with that amount of detail is Akira. Fantasia is a very close second and my personal favorite Disney film. Beethoven's Pastoral segment is a bit sloppy and that is why I knock it down a notch. Bambi is also incredible. The first five Disney films are all top tier releases. It took them a while to find their groove again after the war finished. The worst would maybe be Robin Hood or Sword in the Stone. Robin Hood holds a special place in my heart as it was the first Disney film I ever saw but the sketchy style animation they used during this period definitely isn't as well done as their earlier films. |

They had been doing it for decades by that point. Someone posted a YouTube thing in one of the other threads.

As far as the Walt era goes that would be Sleeping Beauty. The Blu-ray looks stunning.
For the modern age I would go with The Rescuers Down Under. It was the first Disney animated film to fully use the CAPS system. The animation and visual effects seemed really advanced at the time. The way hair, feathers, fur, and water moves. As well as all of the flying and falling aerial scenes. Personally it's one of my favorite and most watched Renaissance era Disney films as I happened to have the VHS as a kid and didn't have the other more popular films of the era. Bambi is the only other Disney animated film that I've seen as much or more than, which I also had the VHS. |

And The Aristocats, The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, the short subject Goliath II, another short involving a football game...I don't blame the animators (although acclaimed animator Milt Kahl blew a gasket during production, storming down the hall of the old Disney animation studios and yelling, "You're all garbage men!" at the other animators)...see, crew has to make deliverables on the budget they're given. So don't blame the animators, blame Donn Tatum and Card Walker for downsizing the budget, and also the bug-a-boo of rushing to a release date.
To be fair, recycled animation pops up throughout the history of Disney feature animation and the shorts, even re-used F/X animation. Robin Hood is notable for so much of it in one movie, let alone one sequence. Last edited by Ernest Rister; 01-25-2023 at 12:54 AM. |

Best-Looking Before CAPS -- That's a bit of a death match between Pinocchio and Fantasia, with honorable mentions to Bambi, Lady and the Tramp, Sleeping Beauty, and 101 Dalmatians, and I'll go one farther giving some love to production designer Mary Blair, whose work was inspired and striking, especially in the post-War package films. It's also hard to resist the charm of Dumbo and those water-colors and detailed backgrounds in Snow White by Pinocchio's Gustaf Tenggren.
Worst-Looking Before CAPS -- Oliver and Co., and by a sizable margin. It's not even a contest. Last edited by Ernest Rister; 01-24-2023 at 05:39 AM. |
