Default Do You Toss Your Old DVD's?

I was curious, for those who have both a DVD and Blu-ray of a particular movie, do you just keep the DVD in your collection, or toss it? I've been cleaning out my home of all the junk, and I'm just throwing away the DVD's of movies that I already have a Blu-ray for. I'm never going to watch them again, and the DVD resale market, with shipping charges and such, just makes reselling them pointless.

The only DVDs I've bothered to keep are ones that have worthwhile bonus features that weren't ported over to the Blu-ray. Otherwise, the DVD is given away if I've upgraded to the Blu-ray version.

That's a pretty good policy. I know I've parted with a number of dvds that I later regretted because I didn't research the blu beforehand and then was later disappointed to find out it was missing some key extras which were not ported over. As just a couple of examples, Willow and Ferris Bueller's Day Off do not have the commentary tracks originally found on the dvd.

Yeah, that's pretty ridiculous -- the Blu-ray should have almost everything the DVD has plus more. They should never lose the bigger special features, such as commentaries. As previously mentioned in the thread, things like galleries are useless to me and I'm fine with losing them. But any worthwhile features should make it to the upgraded release. I think I held on to the two disc DVD of Peter Jackson's King Kong because a lot of those extras didn't make it over to the Blu-ray.

I've been slowly selling mine off at garage sales, about $3 a pop. Most of that money goes towards BD discs I'm interested in.

Actually I still have most of mine in a box. Tossing them feels wrong.

Sure, this is fine for those who have time to watch the special features. As it stands, I don't even have time to watch all of the Blu's/DVD's I own anyway, so I could care less about the special features. The only thing I really watch (other than the film itself) is the trailer, and if a Blu doesn't have that for whatever reason, I'll just watch it online.

I just sold my DVD copy of JOYSTICKS for $20 to someone who apparently wanted it bad enough but didn't want a Blu-ray version of it for some reason. Of course, maybe that individual isn't on an internet forum and has no idea that there is a BD version available lol. Dime-a-dozen Hollywood stuff won't get you much but lesser-known movies or harder-to-find titles may yield a decent amount, if not a decent profit. Everything depends on the movie, the condition of the disc/packaging and whether or not you sell it to someone who isn't on a forum 24/7 but is still a movie geek. Cheapskates won't give you $2 for much of anything so throwaway titles end up in the trash. I gave up giving unwanted DVDs to my family because the disc will just sit in a drawer and collect dust. Wasn't worth the expense of shipping them.
Most DVD's are not worth anything, unless they're OOP. However, even if they are, the problem with trying to sell anything - including things like older DVD's - is the hassle involved. It means you have to go online, find someone who wants this, deal with shipping the item, deal with the possibility the item will get lost in the mail, etc. Not worth it to me. Giving DVD's away to the library (or other places that will appreciate the donation) is effortless.....

I'm currently doing the same thing. I use 3 things I determine in either trashing, keeping or trading:
1. Is it damaged or highly scratched? If so, into the garbage it goes
2. Will I watch it again? If yes, then it goes into a double disc amaray next to its BD counterpart for when I go to somebody's house who doesn't have a BD player.(happened 2 weeks ago)
3. If I have no desire to watch again & it's undamaged off to a local store for TRADE CREDIT

I keep ones with extras exclusive to the format (often putting them in the same case as the Blu to create my own "combo pack"), sell off what I can, and for the small handful left over, often donate to friends and family. Even if I only get a buck back selling a certain old DVD, hey, it's better than nothing, and in bulk can add up to a decent chunk of change.

That's what I would've done in the past. But there are fewer and fewer local stores around here to do that with.

For what it's worth:

If I buy a Blu & have the DVD of the film, I'll donate the DVD to the local library. They'll usually put this into their system, and at least others can get some benefit from this.

If a DVD is scratched, you can recycle these in some places - the Best Buy near me has a bin in the front (as you enter the store) where you can recycle DVD's/CD's. I recycle any ruined/scratched DVD's/CD's/expired DVD digital copies there....

As far as selling used DVD's, why?! As has been discussed on other threads, you will probably get very little if you sell these to pawn shops, etc. The Half-priced Books in my area does buy used DVD's (I think), but you'll probably get 25 cents/1 dollar for them. No thanks. I'll spend more $ in the gas driving over there than I'll make in selling these to a store...what a waste of time/money....

I combo-pack my DVDs with the Blu-Rays. Unless you sell them off in Bulk lots, you really don't get squat for them over here (unless they are OOP or Rare).

Biff the cases and I have a box for the covers/inserts (which I should probably biff too).

A lot of the time there are featurettes or commentaries that don't get copied over to the Blu-Ray editions, not to mention the occasional aspect ratio change.

They take up no more room by putting them in with the Blu-Rays.

No, I sell them. I regularly get $20-$40 for OOP discs on eBay, or I'll sell them off to a secondhand place for $1-$4 each, which adds up. People who throw them away are throwing away money.

As previous posters have mentioned the local library is a great place to donate used DVDs. Ours lends out DVDs quite often and many seniors rely on those libraries for their movie night planning.

Also try donating to goodwill or nursing homes.

Don't trash them. Many people could still get great enjoyment out of them.

Give the DVDs that you don't want to other family members or friends. Have you ever thought about donating them to a local library or to the salvation army? They will be more than glad to take them. There are many things that you can do with your unwanted DVDs besides throwing them away. One man's junk is another man's treasure! Start giving your DVDs to somebody who can use them. Yes, used DVDs are not worth much anymore (except for the OOP titles), but you can still give them to somebody.

I sell most DVDs from combo packs on eBay. I usually get at least $5-10 on these discs if it's a new release.

I just started selling them.

I got ripped off with my PS3. Never got the money, so I need to make sure the sites are legit.

If the Blu-ray ports all the bonus features (or most; I don't mind missing things like art galleries, storyboard comparisons, etc.), then I get rid of the DVD version. I'll remove them from the shelf and set them aside until enough of them build up, then take them the next time I drop stuff off at Goodwill. However, I have kept some DVDs, either because they're autographed or simply for nostalgic reasons because I had it and watched the heck out of it for so long. Both cases are rare, but have occasionally happened.

Most of my DVD collection consists of genre movies (roughly 65-70%, primarily horror) and art house (25-30%, primarily Criterion and MoC releases).

I have been selling off duplicates and films I know I will never revisit for the last three years. A collector friend has first dibs on Criterion and MoC, and the rest usually gets sold off on the Collector's Market during the annually horror film festival here.

I have quite a lot of collector's items, but I usually set the prices quite low, and I typically make around $700-900 in the 6-7 hours the market is on. I could probably get a lot more for some of the items, but then it gets to be a question whether I will sell it at all, and I really want to have as little as possible to take back home when the market is finished.

Mostly I am happy if I sell as much as possible and have a fun time doing it, hanging out with customers and other vendors. If I end up having a little cash extra, that's just a bonus. Usually I use part of it to buy vintage movie posters from the other vendors anyway - e.g. last year I found the old Danish posters for 'Ilsa - She-devil of the SS' and 'It's Alive', plus had money left for a PS4 and a few games. This year I ended up with the Danish poster for 'Squirm' and the incredible rare poster for 'Last House on the Left' (until my copy popped up at the market, only one other copy was known to exist).
