Extended, only because I prefer the extended cuts of the other two films and the EE of An Unexpected Journey ties into them better than the theatrical cut does.

I've only watched the theatrical cut of "An Unexpected Journey".
I checked out the extended scenes on YouTube though. I think I
prefer the theatrical cut.

For example...this song would really take me out of the movie:

The extended cuts are way better. The film's lengths feel more deserved with the added scenes.

I REALLY liked the extended cuts of "The Desolation of Smaug" and "The Battle of the Five Armies".

But again...I'm not so sure about "An Unexpected Journey".

Extended. It only adds a little, but it brings more of the whimsy of the book like the Goblin song (I love the way the Goblin King clenches his fist like a rock star when the song ends) and dials in the throughline of the missing Dwarven rings which Jackson added into the EE of Smaug too.

There's some good and some not-so-great additions to the Journey EE, but overall the pros outweigh the cons in the long run. Besides, it's not like the we're losing some breathlessly furious pacing from the theatrical cut; both move at about the same speed, for better or worse.

Yup. I'm normally big on theatrical cuts because they remove the bloat, but in this case the EE additions and changes don't have the same effect.

Don't forget some beautiful bits with Bilbo in Rivendell.

Extended cut all the way every time but I HATE the goblin kingdom song. I would lose that immediately but everything else I love. Same goes for Desolation of Smaug and Battle of Five Armies.

I prefer the extended versions for all 3 of the Hobbit films (and all 3 LOTR too for that matter). The theatrical versions made sense for the initial releases though. I like having both.
