Criterion Paris Belongs to Us (1961)

Quote:
One of the original critics turned filmmakers who helped jump-start the French New Wave, Jacques Rivette began shooting his debut feature in 1957, well before that cinema revolution officially kicked off with The 400 Blows and Breathless. Ultimately released in 1961, the rich and mysterious Paris Belongs to Us offers some of the radical flavor that would define the movement, with a particularly Rivettian twist. The film follows a young literature student (Betty Schneider) who befriends the members of a loose-knit group of twentysomethings in Paris, united by the apparent suicide of an acquaintance. Suffused with a lingering post–World War II disillusionment while evincing a playful temperament, Rivette’s film marked the provocative start to a brilliant directorial career.

Me too.

I'm going to purchase Le Pont du Nord and Out 1, but they'll be my first entries to Rivette.

Mine too. I've wanted to see this for a long time. I'm a sucker for New Wave titles to begin with. And I've read about this over the years. Finally I will get to see the darn thing!

I've heard and read about this film many times but never seen it. Will rectify that problem once this is released.

I noticed that Barnes & Noble's pre-order price ($25.87) is a bit cheaper then Amazon ($27.99). Might be worth it if you have a coupon.

Anyone have any thoughts on this film. I think the whole new wave may be me getting older but having a hard time even watching this movie. I made it about 60 mins through it and while I think it looks good, I like many of the actors I'm kind of bored by the false importance of the whole story.

I remember still buying the DVDs for many now OOP in the US French new wave films like A woman is a woman and many other films and how I might just be getting older and feel that many of these films are for the young and I hate to say it but "hipster" crowd. I still love many of these films but Paris Belongs to Us just isn't doing it for me. I can't waste anymore time with it today perhaps I will finish it next Sunday and SE if I change my mind on it.
