Default Common Denominator for Best Looking Movies

Hey guys,

So I was watching the Expendables 3 last night for the first time. Say what you will about the movie, but the picture quality was absolutely jaw-dropping. But why? I would like to find more movies on bluray with the the same properties that made EX3 so appealing to me. The clarity and detail was just about the best I've seen on bluray. Any feedback as to what to look for as well as other movie recommendations on bluray with similar results to EX3 would be immensely appreciated.

Note-I'm not a huge fan of film grain. I like my movies to look a crisp and clean as possible. Would I be correct in thinking part of the reason EX3 was so appealing to me was becuase it wasn't shot on film and shot digitally instead?
