Default People who spoil films should be punished

This is a website where fans of cinema vist, it should go without saying that people should be courteous about revealing things about movies. Yet, more and more I'm seeing people posting spoilers to movies without using spoiler tags. Whether it be in an animated gif, or just outright blurting the spoiler. I've seen two examples of this today in fact.

This should not be allowed.

I believe there should be punishments in place to curb this kind of behavior. The fact that nothing is being done about it means the same people who constantly do it (e.g. Ray Jackson) keep on doing it. A 24 hour suspension and/or a warning will hopefully help people get the message

Thank You

Agreed, though I would say a three-day suspension would be more appropriate for a first offense. Spoiler tags are easy to use and intentionally spoiling a movie for people on an enthusiast site is a scumbag move.

Out of curiosity, which movies did he spoil for you today?

Ray Jackson should be suspended simply for having the most ridiculous avatar on the forum.
In all seriousness though, I agree. If you're going to talk about movies and are spoiling things that happen in movies, you should at least have some courtesy and use spoiler tags. They're not hard to use. People are just too lazy to use them.

Please report people who spoil the movie on purpose...even if its accidental, report them for our review and to place the spoiler within tags .

Seriously, that would be a more ridiculous reason for somebody being banned than 'trolling'.

A warning or gentle reminder maybe but a ban? Bit much.

MifuneFan suggested a warning or 24-hour suspension. No one said anything about anyone being banned.

What kind of movies are we talking about? If we're talking anything even remotely new than yeah i fully agree. Or i we talking all movies? I'm in belief that if you haven't seen say Terminator 2 by now you most likely aren't going to. Do we keep spoilers hidden for 20+ year old movies? I'd like to think at some point a film has reached a point that you can freely talk about it.

Anyway if people are ruining new movies yeah that sucks.

I use spoiler tags when I'm talking about a new movie (6 months or less), I never use spoiler tags on a TV series discussion. If I haven't watched a movie I read some reviews first and make up my mind whether I want to see it or not, if I do I stay away from threads talking about the said movie before I watch it, if I don't I stay away too because it doesn't matter to me. When I watch a TV show on a week per week episode I never visit a thread talking about it if I missed the last episode, this is even more important when I'm catching up or for the TV shows that I decided to watch on a marathon.

I think banning or suspending a member for spoiling a movie is way too hardcore, as movie fans we should behave ourselves and stay away from the thread that might spoil a movie we haven't seen and wish to. Seriously visiting a thread talking a film we want to see before we did is like walking on purpose on a trap, we shouldn't make others pay for our own mistakes. Nobody is forcing us to read about it on a forum where everybody discuss a film, reviewers are meant for talking about a movie and don't spoil it, we're not.

I don't believe it should be an automatic suspension since people have different options on what a spoiler is. Otherwise, you wouldn't be able to discuss a movie what so ever.

I'm not even talking about having a movie spoiled if you're in a thread for that movie. There are times when someone just blurts out a spoiler in a completely different thread. Ask all those that got the movie Don't Look Now spoiled by Ray Jackson in an unrelated thread.

I also said that just a warning to them would be fine, but I think if they are repeat offenders then they should be suspended. Interpreting the severity of the spoiler is of course a factor, the same as interpreting the severity of a personal attack is for a mod. If it's something minor then that's okay, but if it's something that gives away the entire movie, then they need a warning.

I usually do report posts with spoilers. Sometimes mods do something about it, and sometimes they don't.

I personally suspend when there's a malicious intent involved. Otherwise, I edit the post to include spoiler tags and send a pm. Obviously, repeat offenders may need some time off

That's a completely different story, spoiling a movie on an unrelated thread should indeed be punished.

I definitely think there needs to be a clearer line about how spoilers are seen in the forum. While I totally get the "well if you haven't seen it, you shouldn't be in the thread" and the "well it's over ten years old, why am I still adding spoiler tags" arguments it would be too easy for that to apply to everything.

Missing a small movie in cinemas, for example, and then going into the preorder thread for the movie only to find people discussing the movie itself and not the release, at length within the thread and spoiling it is a real pet peeve of mine, couldn't you make a separate thread for that?

TV shows are a nightmare here, too. If a show is like ten seasons deep, you're going to have stuff you'll want to talk about along the way but most TV threads here are just full blown spoilers everywhere so you're best off not even bothering entering the thread to share your feelings, which is a shame.

If your not up-to-date stay away, that's not a shame it's normal people talk about what happened in the last episode most of the time. If you're visiting the thread and you haven't watch the very last episode that aired all you deserve is to be spoiled, why blaming others for your own mistakes?

So people watching a show brand new and from the start should be excluded from the discussion because they aren't fully up to date? Why? If you love a show, shouldn't you encourage people to watch it and be passionate about it? Rather than making it seem like some stupid club? I guess you just expect them to write a novel and then when they get to the current episode, just unleash it all in one go? There is literally no mistake here, just a bunch of people in a thread being stubborn because wrapping their spoilers in spoiler tags is hard or something.

I wish the 'Contacting Moderators' thread was getting more posts because I think not being able to contact moderators if you disagree with a ban (or 'suspension', if you want to call temporary bans that) is a far more serious issue than this and of greater concern.

So post in that thread instead of hijacking this one. But considering mods have already spoken, I suggest you drop it.

Not only small movies, but consider some smaller/niche BD distributors that deal in releasing older films...

Criterion, Shout/Scream Factory, Arrow...I've witnessed a few spoilers in threads for films like these. Sure, many of the films they release are old/foreign, but (in most cases) this is the first time they're being released on BD, so some respect for those who haven't seen them should be had.

I read the threads for films like these to learn about quality. Thankfully, again, there's only been a few times where I've been spoiled.

Handicap or not, he just doesn't seem to realise that the Mod's have to treat him the same as everyone else. His disorder is not their responsibility.

Well I visit a lot of threads talking about TV shows and 95% of the time we talk about the very last episode that aired, I always watch Game of Thrones on a marathon when it's released on Blu-ray so I stay th f*** away from the thread until I'm up-to-date. If you want to encourage people to watch a TV series why would you go try to convince people to watch in a thread where everyone involved already do it? The Bates Motel thread was dead until the season 4 premiere aired last Tuesday, why do you think? After I watched it I went there and every single post were spoiling the first episode and that is NORMAL. If you want to be spoiled just go to those thread before you're up-to-date, I don't care but you're the only one to blame, none of the posters are. BTW it isn't spoiling it's a discussion on the last episode, nobody uses spoiler tags. (and I never will)
