Default Decided to grab DVD versions of movies I'm still waiting for on Blu.

There are still about 10-20 movies that I have been waiting for on Blu-ray and given how long I could be waiting for these movies to come to Blu-ray I made up my mind the other day that I am just going to snag the DVD copies instead to hold me over till the day comes that they maybe get released on Blu. Given that basically all these movies are dirt cheap on DVD its not like it's a big deal if I do end up double dipping anyways. Blu-ray has been out for 10 years now so I'm just going to accept the fact that not EVERY movie is going to even make it to Blu-ray. The same will be true for movies on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray.

Has anyone else here just said screw it and picked up DVD versions of movies that they've been waiting for forever on Blu-ray?

Every time I do, it's announced on blu-ray within 3 months. So: not anymore.

What are the dirt cheap movies you bought? This thread would be far more useful with an actual list.

When I made the upgrade to blu, I went through and kept all the DVD's that didn't have a blu release, or was a bare bones release. And then I just sell them as the blu's come out. I've also picked up a few DVD's still over the years like Haunted Honeymoon and Stay Tuned, as who knows if/when they'll see release.

Ghost and the Darkness isn't even anamorphic, so you wasted $5 there.

Yeah. Moreso for tv shows, but movies too. That includes new releases.

Some of the titles I became aware of in the last month that are soon being released on dvd but not Blu are: The Program, Identicals, Glassland, A Royal Night Out, About Scout, The League Season 7, DCI Banks: Season 4, Rizzoli & Isles: Season 6, Hot in Cleveland: Season 6, Beauty and the Beast: Season 3.

Some of those will be released on Blu-ray in other countries, for those who import, but not all. If there's a title that someone really wants that's not available elsewhere (or you don't want to import), especially if it's cheap and/or you prefer physical media, then it makes sense to me to lock it in with a DVD.

I'd rather have a digital Hd version then a dvd copy, though.

If it's not on blu-ray then I'll rent it on Amazon. My last DVD purchase was in 2008.

I recently bought Frank Perry's Doc on DVD and about a week later saw that it was being released on BD in Germany. So for fans of this film (and Perry), you're welcome.

It's not a big loss of the Blu versions got announced next week.
So am I, but non-anamorphic DVDs aren't even watchable anymore. Some DVDs are fine, just saying that one is not.

There's around 200 movies I WANT to come to blu that still haven't, but I'm on no rush or hurry to buy a DVD just because it hasn't come out yet. There are enough other films on blu to watch so I can have patience waiting.

Non-anamorphic DVDs only have 25% lower resolution than anamorphic DVDs, so it's hardly a major drop in quality.

There are times where I'd like to pick up a movie on DVD because yes if your a fan of a film then it shouldn't matter as long as you have it to watch. Example. I love Honey I Shrunk The Kids but the DVD is God awful and yes very cheap but however it's just in fullscreen, same with Michael with John Travolta, I haven't picked these up yet and trying to have patience 😀 If it's a movie I can go without til it's released I will wait but if its one that I want in the collection no matter what then yes I will buy it.

These are available in HD digitaly. Likely won't get a blu-ray release.

I've gotten a lot of them over the last couple years, and still often buy them if I want to see a movie and there's no blu-ray announced. I'd rather have a half-decent DVD of a lot of things like old monster films than have nothing. Ex, a lot of those old Universal horror movies seem like they're never going to see a release. Then there are a lot of things like say, those Universal Sci-Fi sets where some of the films have gotten expensive single releases in Germany, and I just don't like the movies enough to drop 30+ bucks on the single ones when there's a perfectly good anamorphic DVD in a set with other flicks which may never see the light of blu-ray. :P I've gotten burned more times by NOT buying a DVD which then went out of print and skyrocketed in cost than I have by buying a DVD which then was announced for blu-ray. If you want to own a film and there's no blu-ray and the DVD's still in print and 20 bucks or less, I say go for it.

I don't buy digital movies or streaming services. I own the Ghost and the Darkness DVD as well as the Abyss Special Edition DVD.

Some of us prefer to have control over the things we buy, rather than leave their fate in the hands of the studios. That is far more important than the video and audio quality.

Buy the DVD, get an HD copy on Vudu with Disc to Digital. Best of both worlds!
