Waterworld 4K UHD (1995) with Ulysses Cut in 4K

Plaion Pictures just announced a 6-Disc release of "Waterworld" during a Live-Stream on YouTube to be released on August 14th. In a World-Exclusive it will contain the Ulysses Cut in 4K! It's called "Langfassung" (long version) on the product page, but Plaion confirmed it's the Ulysses Cut during the Live-Stream and that it's going to be released in 4K for the first time. They also mentioned later on that they got the Master from Universal and that the Ulysses Cut is there "own creation" to which they added some additional tweaks like color correction. I think they mentioned specifically dialing down the yellowish look somewhat.

According to the Live-Stream Disc 1 and Disc 2 will be UHDs with Theatrical Cut and Ulysses Cut respectively, while Disc 3 and Disc 4 will contain those cuts on Blu-Ray. Disc 5 is Bonus-Materials and Disc 6 the Soundtrack-Album.

Just listened to the live stream not live and can also confirm that they said Ulysses Cut and new 4K master. I still won't order it just yet, but I'll buy it a third time if true.

I just watched a repeat of the live stream and they mentioned getting the Master from Universal and that the 4K-Master of the "Ulysses Cut" is their "own creation". I missed that "own creation" part when I watched the stream live. I hope that doesn't mean it's just going to be an upscale.

I didn't watch all of it (might tomorrow), but I'm not afraid of an own creation. I don't expect a new scan or anything, just putting the Ulysses cut together with material provided by Universal. I think they also said new grading. Here's optimistic re. getting a nice 4K version of the Ulysses cut. I still don't get why Arrow didn't provide such (can't remember if they gave a good reason not to).

Not jettisoning the Arrow over one disc, but if they pull it off and it looks nice, cool. I seem to remember someone saying Arrow thought it looked better in 1080p because the quality changes between footage was less jarring. So for the moment I think I'll trust an Arrow 1080p build over Plaion.

Surely Arrow would have done if they could, that extra footage wasn't in 4k to begin with, I doubt it is even available for Plaion to rescan.

I honestly can't remember how good or bad the Ulysses cut exclusive footage looks on the Arrow BD (EDIT: resp. the TV cut footage on the Uni 4K actually), but I'm not sure I'll agree with Arrow would've done if they could. And I do remember people wondering why Arrow didn't include it and being disappointed by what the Arrow provided. There's also several releases where including worse elements worked just fine. One of those coming from Arrow actually.

So for the moment I'm optimistic re. getting something better than the Arrow BD. Can't be worse than what Sony did with Cliffhanger.

Nice, but what happened to the extended cut of the "Maelstrom: The Odyssey of Waterworld" documentary? It was supposed to be 30 minutes longer, but it's just 3 minutes longer instead after all this wait?!

Yep! About 30 minutes longer with lots of additions and new material.

Would be nice if they released it in a cheaper keepcase edition down the line, but given how they've kept the alternate cuts of Lynch's Dune exclusive to the super expensive 6 disc sets, I'm not holding any hope.

Listened to the whole thing now and that's what they said as in I am quoting:
- komplett neues 4K Master
- komplett farbkorrigiert
- framingkorrigiert
- so wie der Film eigentlich aussehen sollte
- nicht so gelbstichig
- Kinofassung ist das Universal Master, Ulysses ist Eigenkreation

Didn’t check the booklet of the Arrow BD release myself, but just saw it being quoted via the blu-ray.com review elsewhere:

The original 35mm camera negative was scanned in 4K resolution on a Lasergraphics Director scanner at EFilm, Burbank. Additional 35mm intermediary elements were scanned in 4K resolution for those sections unique to the Extended TV Cut and Ulysses Cut versions. An extensive search was undertaken by NBC Universal to locate all the additional sequences, optical sections and titles necessary to complete these longer versions of the film. Some of the effects sequences in these longer versions were never completed for the theatrical release so they remain in unfinished form.

And going by this everything should be available in 4K. Only some unfinished effects are what they are. And I for one still don't understand why Arrow didn't include such a 4K with the 4K release. Even if it isn't perfect, that's what I'd like to have.

And all* those super expensive sets were full of scratched discs, as this one will be.

*I bought three sets but couldn't even put one undamaged set together as there were marks on pretty much every disc

Every single one I've bought.

I bought both the original acrylic Dune set and the re-release (twice) - for the money I paid the discs were in dreadful condition.

I also had to get two of the Emmanuelle box set, one was full of scratched discs the other only had scratches on the UHD.

Same goes for The Bride With the White Hair, got two of those but the same discs were scratched in both.

I am getting a lot more scratched discs from Germany generally these days but Koch/Plaion box sets are the WORST. I am sick of returning and replacing them and never being able to get one with undamaged discs.

Fair enough, I didn't receive any scratched disc from them. I also wouldn't want to import such sets though to be fair. But they said there won't be a regular IIRC.

Having said that, I don't receive scratched Shout or Criterion discs either. Don't know if I'm lucky.

You’re lucky. I’m still receiving scratched discs from time to time. Thankfully most of them are from Criterion which I can get replaced. My KL BD of Brokeback Mountain also has scratches.

While it's great that the Ulysses is coming to 4K, I just can't help but feel that this release is another frustrating half measure. They're doing all that scanning, colour correcting, framing etc..... yet aren't reconstructing the theatrical cut? They've done all that legwork for farrks sake - for all the footage that comprises the theatrical cut anyway . Yet they're plopping the Universal master on there yet again. It boggles my mind.
