Sing Sing seems to be getting early buzz though I don’t think it’ll manage to keep up momentum based off the trailer, but I thought the same thing about Past Lives this time last year.

Godzilla x Kong will win best Picture

The Oscars will bring back the fan favorite award and Rebel Moon Part 2 will win in a landslide with 984 trillion votes.

Nosferatu could potentially be a contender next year. I know horror is always shunned... but if Eggers can pull it off, it could break through.

If Joker: Folie a Deux can do the impossible and be as good as the first, it could be a strong contender again.

I bet Deadpool and Wolverine has strong showing at Golden Globes.

Dune 2 should have strong showing as long as the studio amps up the campaign in November

Horizon could see Costner back in the conversation

I guarantee Twisters gets a nomination for Sound and Pry VFX

Gladiator 2 may do well as well

That's my early list of contenders. Last year we pretty much knee Oppenheimer and Killers would feature strongly, not sure I see any 100% sure bet Best Picture nominees yet, but there are ones that have the potential if they can nail them.

The first film got a Best Picture nomination and had the most nominations and wins in 2021, so I wouldn't exactly call it a stretch for an arguably superior sequel.

I'd love to see Dune get more recognition beyond just the technical categories (which it's more than deserving of). I know genre films are hard to get recognized, with a few exceptions, but Dune feels like that special case that's more than deserving. The Oscars aren't gonna lose any credibility if they recognize a big sci-fi epic. If anything, it may help with their nerd cred a little bit. Same goes for other nerdy movies coming out this year- Furiosa, Joker, etc. I know Fury Road and Joker 1 got some good love from the Academy, but let's keep it up!

It’s fun to reflect on what movies we expected might do well, even if we’re often way off-base this far in advance (Check out our early 2023 predictions for a laugh).

There’s always a necessary disclaimer for this list. When looking at films months away from release or festival season, the list will skew heavily toward established filmmakers, English-language films, and those with slightly higher budgets. Non-English language films will surely be in contention in top categories at the Oscars, but it is challenging to spot which ones this far in advance.
