I took a few caps if anybody is interested. My general impression: good enough, looks like your average Kino Lorber release.

Bought the Kino Lorber Blu-ray, hoping it would get the new transfer, but it did not. The same master appears to be used for the Kino Lorber Blu-ray, with the window-boxed opening credits intact, but the compression is much worse than the Japanese Blu-ray (which I also own). The earlier scene with Modesty Blaise meeting up with 2 guys in the dark room looks horrendous on the Kino, with the black suits worn by the 2 guys are artifacting like crazy. On the other hand, the heavy grains on the suits are well resolved on the Japanese Blu-ray. The image also looks brighter on the Kino, and looks pale & not filmic at all. This is not the first time I see Kino brighting up the image (The Honey Pot is another example, compared to the excellent Signal One Blu-ray). Maybe it's their encoder doing it, but Modesty Blaise looks much worse than the Japanese Blu-ray for sure, at least to my eyes.

On the other hand, the lossless audio on the Kino sounds much better on the Kino than the lossy audio on the Japanese Blu-ray. I found this lossy audio to be quite bad, so it was a huge let down to know that the Kino image was much worse than the Japanese Blu-ray, meaning I have to stick with the Japanese Blu-ray, even with this lossy audio. Hope someone would release the definitive release, though.

Oh, forgot to mention that the Kino does not have any subtitles while the Japanese Blu-ray has both Japanese & English subtitles. That may be a plus for some.

So neither is ideal, that is a shame. What are the chances someone like Arrow might pick this up for the UK?

Brilliant film--can't seem to get the theme song out of my head now.
Amazon states that the disc will have both English audio and subs.

Amazon JP says it is a Japan exclusive release, just like Emperor of the North. I'll definitely bite as I've been a huge fan of the film! Hope the price comes down before the release date, though (still no discount).

I placed my order 24 hrs ago, but I'm sure the price will drop before the release date.

More Terence Stamp on blu ray please.

This isn't a Japanese exclusive. It's simply coming out in Japan on April 22nd. Other countries will follow, even if those countries do not include the US or the UK (where there are now cuts to horsefalls in this film).

Please be aware, too, that Fox Japan currently claims this will not have English lossless audio. Presently, they are listing an English: Dolby Digital 2.0 track, and a Japanese: DTS-HD MA Mono dubbed audio track:

Pre-ordered it & Emperor of the North with the price drop.
BTW, Harry & Tonto is in the same batch, and will be released on the same day.
