![]() Blu-ray.com Community's Top 50 Crime Movies If you're familiar with me as a poster, or can see by my profile pic, I'm a big fan of crime movies. It's my favorite genre of film, with over half my top 10 filled with them. Filmsite defines a crime film as, "films developed around the sinister actions of criminals or gangsters, particularly bankrobbers, underworld figures, or ruthless hoodlums who operate outside the law." For a film to be considered a crime movie, I would say it's main focus must be on criminal activities of its main characters. However, not every crime flick is limited to a bunch of hard-edged mafiosos whacking people and robbing banks. The Wolf of Wall Street may not be your traditional violent crime film, but it fits that same bill. Prison movies like The Shawshank Redemption and Escape from Alcatraz are allowed. As for films considered ineligible, films that mostly take the point of view of law enforcement do not qualify. For example, John McClain may be taking down criminals in Die Hard, but it's focus is not on the crime elements. However, films that focus equally on both sides, (Heat, The Departed), or blur the lines between cop and criminal (L.A. Confidential, To Live and Die in L.A.) work fine. No Superhero films. The Dark Knight may have some crime elements, but overall it is based in a genre that does not fit with the idea of this list. No Westerns. This one is a bit lenient, Modern westerns like No Country For Old Men may count, but not Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Like superhero films, it's based too much in a genre that does not fit with this list. If you're not sure about a certain film's eligibility, please ask. EDIT: After rethinking, I've decided to allow crime mysteries, and most forms of film noire. Films like Se7en, Chinatown, and Blue Velvet that focus HEAVILY on crine are eligible. However, something like Vertigo may involve a crime, but is not the focus of the movie. Just use your best judgement, and don't get too crazy and put down something like Erin Brockovich.
