connecting turntable to Pioneer VSX 1122

I'm trying to connect my Pro-ject Debut Carbon to my Pioneer VSX 1122 receiver. Everything is hooked up. Plugged in to CD red/white input and attached ground wire to random screw.

All I'm getting is a faint sound from my speakers. Even when turning it up all the sound is low and without bass and 'impact'. This same thing happened when I had my turntable set up to a vintage phillips receiver, but I quickly found that the 'tape monitor' switch was clicked to 'A' instead of 'Source'.

The sound coming out of the Pioneer is the same as when the phillips was on tape monitor. Is there a similar switch on modern receivers that I'm not finding? Do I need to connect to a pre-amp before going to the Pioneer? Could the ground wire need to be connected to something other than a random screw on the back panel?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
