Are you sure your TV is calibrated properly?

Is your TV calibrated?

Otherwise, we need examples. In what movies do you notice this sort of thing happening?

You either need to calibrate your TV or get a shiny new 4K with dat HDR.

Turn off the "dull" option on your TV that should do the trick

Alright, I haven't had a chance to even watch my copy of the American Pie movies, but they are catalogue titles that may not have received the love and care other movies have (especially from Universal, ew). The movie's review on the site even states:

TV settings might improve the brightness, but I'd recommend checking with a reference-quality movie first (like, I dunno, any Pixar movie, any Disney movie, any Marvel movie, most other newer movies) to see how dark they appear. If all the movies you're watching appear too dark, then definitely adjust your TV settings. But sometimes, the movies themselves will have cruddy transfers or were shot dark on purpose, and they can't always be helped.

EDIT:
I see you reviewed Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. That's about as bright and colorful as a movie can get. I recommend adjusting your settings to that movie rather than American Pie 2.

EDIT EDIT:
Popped in my copy of AP2, and yep, it's pretty dim. Pick another one.

What temperature setting are you using? I personally think Warm 2 looks on the dull side, Warm 1 looks much better on my TV.
