Then 1-3, if you must.

Show em' the originals. As for the prequels, I'd leave it to your friend as to watch them or not, given how absurdly divisive they are.

And after all is said and done, go right to The Force Awakens.

If there are people under 21 that have not watched any of the Star Wars films, then I'm not sure those are people worth knowing.

Tbh I got someone hooked after taking them to see the force awakens first. Now he loves the original set most. Maybe he felt the connection with the new one and gave the earlier films a chance

My wife (in her 40s) watched all the Star Wars movies for the first time last year. Together we watched them in numerical order (Episodes 1 to 6) last year before heading to see 'The Force Awakens'. She had never seen any of them before, but figured she knew enough about them already ( including the "big reveal" at the end of Empire).

These were her general thoughts on each movie:

Episode I - Fun to watch. The scenery, make up and costumes all looked beautiful. Thought Jar jar could've been toned down. Looked forward to seeing the rest.

Episode II - Anakin was a brat, but thought the love story was cute.

Episode III - was genuinely shocked when Anakin became Darth Vader. Felt sorry for him for being manipulated by the Emperor.

Episode IV - looked dated, but was still an OK movie. Thought Obi-Wan was a jerk for lying to Luke about his father. Was surprised when he disappeared when he got struck down by Vader.

Episode V - Leia kissing Luke was creepy. Han Solo was great. Knew before hand that Vader was Luke's father (of course), but was genuinely surprised the moment Luke lost his hand, and she was on the edge of her seat when Vader asked Luke to join him to defeat the Emperor. She said, "oh my god, I'm so excited - I don't know what happens next!). She gasped when Luke jumped instead of joining Vader.

Episode VI - Was happy and relieved when Vader finally threw the Emperor down the shaft. Thought the movie was pretty goofy overall (but still liked it).

So overall she liked the saga, and watching them through her eyes, there are enough plot twists in numerical order to keep someone entertained (the big reveal at the end of 'Empire' has no effect for everyone who already knows that Vader is Luke's father).

For someone going in cold, I recommend watching them in order 1-6.

The fact that the prequels are divisive almost makes it a no brainer to have them watch them. They are NOT as bad as the miserable haters make them out to be so dont fall for all the BS. The prequels have their place and there is plenty of cool stuff & important things happening in them to make them worthwhile.

As for how to show them? Release order - as others have stated. It preserves all of the secrets & twists and IMO A New Hope is a perfect stand alone film with which to introduce them to the SW universe with. So, 4,5,6,7 -----> 1,2,3

There is a cool fan edit where they get watched: 4,5,1,2,3,6,7. Id save that for a second viewing though. It does work and Ive watched them this way. It preserves the Vader reveal but changes the pace and overall "flow" in a positive way IMO. You can even SKIP EP1 completely using this sequence since its considered to be the weakest film and has very little that would be considered "must see" material. I still enjoy it but it can be skipped and not mess up the story much at all.

I've never watched Star Wars, but if I ever do, I'd want to just watch them in order of release date.

Because I'd want to experience the films as if I were alive in the 70's and went to the theater to see all of them. I'd also want the original theatrical versions, and not the ones where Lucas went back and re-edited the original trilogy and added more modern CGI.

Usually the 20th Century Fox opening, followed by a Lucasfilm title card, and finally text that reads: "A long time time ago in a galaxy far, far away...."

Seriously? A New Hope, then ignore all of the rest and go right to a complete unknown in Rogue One?

When you were a teenager, did you routinely watch "old movies" that were made decades before you were born? If you say "yes", you're a liar.

Machete Order: http://www.nomachetejuggling.com/201...viewing-order/

IV, V, II, III, VI - it works for me.

Find out about Luke's parentage, then we see how his father turned to the Dark Side, and on with the grand finale.

Then I guess I'm a huge liar because my dad inteoduced me to the movies of the 30's and 40's and I watched as many as I could get my hands on. This started when I was about 9. But I guess I must be lying.
