Default Big Trouble in Little China (remake)

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson to Star in ‘Big Trouble in Little China’ Remake (Exclusive)

Quote:
20th Century Fox is excited about a new take from “X-Men: First Class” writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is in negotiations to star in a remake of John Carpenter‘s cult classic “Big Trouble in Little China” that will be written by “X-Men: First Class” scribes Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, multiple individuals familiar with the project have told TheWrap.

A representative for 20th Century Fox did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The original 1986 movie starred Kurt Russell and Kim Cattrall. The film only grossed $11 million at the domestic box office but it is revered as a cult classic and a cable TV staple that fans can’t turn away from when it airs.

Johnson is making a deal play Jack Burton, an All-American trucker who gets dragged into a centuries-old mystical battle in San Francisco’s Chinatown.

Johnson and his producing partners Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia pitched the remake to Fox, which controlled the rights, having released the original movie. “Big Trouble in Little China” is one of Johnson’s favorite movies, and Miller and Stentz have already closed a deal to write the script.

Johnson is coming off a $54 million opening weekend for “San Andreas,” which was also set in San Francisco. The film topped both the domestic and international box office. He’ll soon be seen on HBO’s new original series “Ballers,” which debuts later this month, and he’s also set to star in WB’s comic book movie “Shazam.” Johnson is also lending his voice to Disney’s animated movie “Moana.” He’s represented by WME and Gang, Tyre, Ramer and Brown.

Miller and Stentz wrote the screenplay for Marvel’s “Thor” as well as the upcoming “Power Rangers” movie that will be directed by Dean Israelite. They’re repped by WME and Principato-Young Entertainment.

Uh, um, I have no words.

I know J.C. gets his checks, but there would come a point where I'd be tired of seeing my filmography being remade one by one.

So I suppose that, in this one, Jack Burton actually IS the hero...

Well, the original was a bust for me, but I would be willing to give this one a go if Rock is indeed cast.

Really? I mean REALLY? WHY do we need this?
Is this like hot on the heels of the Kung Fury success or what?

I was a huge fan of The Rock as a kid. I bought his autobiography and I still have a couple of his t-shirts from the Attitude era, lol, but as a film star he doesn't half pick some projects that really don't suit his talents. This is one prime example.

The original was great, no need for a remake.

The original was the inspiration for Raiden in the Mortal Kombat video game series. No original, no Raiden.

Wow. Just wow. They are in total "Lets FORCE Rock Johnson down everyones throat and convince them that hes actually a good actor" mode. Amazing. Nevermind that the original film is just fine as is - remakes and reboots are the thing now.

But.... who the @#$% decided that Dwayne Johnson should or could be a movie star? Whos paying money to watch this meathead eh-hem "act"?

Soon to follow - they'll make a boring, by the numbers drama film starring him to try and "prove" that he has a lot of "range" too.

Un. focking. believable.

I haven't seen all Dwayne Johnson's movies, but I've enjoyed most of the movies he's been in, especially the ones that are a bit lighter in tone. The Jack Burton character is a decent fit, if he plays it right, Burton wasn't the hero after all, he was the side-kick. Not many actors from the era would have done what Kurt Russell did, they would have had the part rewritten, but Kurt is pretty special.

Weird that they're remaking it, they couldn't sell it the first time, the marketing department didn't have a clue what to do with it and they're not much better these days.

Having a truck-driver played by Dwayne Johnson stumbling on a fantasy world he knows nothing about and is ill equipped to deal with could make a decent movie, but I can't imagine they'll go that way.

People said the same about Arnold and Sly, and most actors would kill to have the careers they've had.

The movie going audience. The guy is a pretty big draw. According to BOM, the 16 films where he is listed as a lead have grossed nearly $3.5 billion. That's why he keeps showing up in movies.

You clearly don't like the guy, but a lot of folks do. I do, and I'll watch him in just about anything, including a BTiLC remake as Jack Burton.

Hollywood has really become lazy! It's more convenient to remake and plagiarize old movies, than to create more original scripts...It's pathetic.
