Default Star Trek III - No Klingon subtitles???

So I'm watching my Star Trek III BD from the 6-movie collection and I'm noticing that there are no Klingon subtitles popping up on screen where appropriate. Is that right for this disc? Shouldn't there be "burned in" subtitles for the Klingon dialogue? I mean, I've been watching this film on home video since 1986 (my very first home video on VHS, btw) and I know what they're saying from memory, but WTH? Where's the subtitles?

I notice that there are 3 English subtitle settings in the subtitle menu, 1) standard subtitles, 2) hearing impaired subtitles, and 6) not sure, as nothing happened.

A number of the alien dialogue scenes has been changed to electronic subtitles that should come on automatically. I had no problem with my discs from the Klingons in The Motion Picture to the end of Undiscovered Country.

Interesting. Wonder why my player isn't generating them. I have the Oppo 83, btw.

actually, Klingon is an actual language, along with Tolkien's Elven dialect ... as silly as it sounds it is true.

Yeah... I prefer to not know what's going on in a movie.

The OP, hence the reason for his question. I would think that would be obvious. I notice your collection includes the Star Wars Saga and the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Do you watch those films with or without subtitles for Huttese and Elvish?

By the way, if Star Trek III isn't watched with subtitles for Klingon, then how is the viewer supposed to know what Kruge says to Valkris, or the line that Kirk uses to get Maltz to beam him up? If the filmmakers intended the audience to know what is being said, then I think having subtitles appear correctly is a subject worth caring about.

BTW... you spelled "foreign" wrong (ironically enough).

It could be any number of reasons. Compatibility with the player and that disc, firmware, or simply a bad batch. If it's convenient, I'd say exchange the set for a new one and see if you have the same problem.

I have the Trilogy set that features 2-4 and I never had any problems with the subtitles I wonder if it is just your player or if they used different discs for the different sets?

never noticed myself but it could be a change that paramount made since the technology is better. in the vhs days, it was just easier to burn them on (and you don't really have any other choice in a theatre). now you can have them as an option so those who want to know what the are saying can read it and those who don't care don't have to. depending on what scene you are watching, you don't need to have them. with the first scene, it helps but with David's death, it isn't hard to figure out what he said - actually makes the klingons seem more ruthless because it looks like they are going to kill all 3.

Last I checked, no colleges or universities have classes in Klingon and the language isn't recognized by any country or any government or organization.

what makes it official? people speak it, there are rules to it like any other language; sounds official enough to me. has to be at least as official as esperanto.

And I like how you ignored the questions posed to you about how one is supposed to understand what is happening in a scene with Klingons without the subtitles.

Calm down, folks. The OP isn't asking for subtitles *IN* Klingon (though that's not THAT unreasonable a request for some Trekkies); he's looking for English subtitles for the Klingon dialogue in the movie. (And no, it's not gibberish; in fact, the Klingon language was initially created for ST III.)

Based on all the comments, I'm pretty sure the only one who doesn't understand this is kemcha.

Klingon Language Institute's scholarship

Quote:
You might need to speak Klingon. "Star Trek" fans know the warrior Klingon aliens speak in a guttural, spitting and barking manner, but the Klingon Language Institute's scholarship was not claimed for some years despite the fact that the institute's motto is "Language opens worlds." (In Klingon that's: "qo'mey poSmoH Hol." You don't even need to speak Klingon, but you must be a language student and be creative. Value: $500, in Earth money. (Link)

Well, some folks MIGHT read "Klingon subtitles" as meaning subtitles IN Klingon...
