Default Gene Hackman

Gene Hackman has been a fixture in Cinema for decades. He retired from acting way back in early 2000's and has since made very little public appearances unless out promoting a book he co-wrote. Today 1/30/16 he turns 86 years old which is an amazing number 1 but also his talents are missed in film. Like Sir Sean Connery I highly doubt Mr. Hackman will come out of retirement for one more film. But we have his vast filmography to enjoy over and over. Here is his highlights and what is essential to a collection and what is needed to get a high-def release:

Hackman on BD & those that need to be

Bonnie & Clyde
The French Connection
The Poseidon Adventure
Scarecrow (Not on BD)
The Conversation
Young Frankenstein
Night Moves (Not on BD)
Bite the Bullet
French Connection II
A Bridge Too Far
Superman: The Movie
Superman II
Under Fire
Uncommon Valor (Not on BD)
Target (Not on BD)
Power (Not on BD)
Hoosiers
Superman IV: The Quest for Peace
No Way Out - coming 2/17/16
Bat 21 (Not on BD)
Mississippi Burning
The Package
Loose Cannons (Not on BD)
Narrow Margin (Not on BD)
Class Action (Not on BD)

Company Business
Unforgiven
The Firm
Geronimo: An American Legend (Not on BD)
Wyatt Earp
The Quick and the Dead
Crimson Tide
Get Shorty
The Birdcage
The Chamber (Not on BD)
Absolute Power
Twilight (Not on BD)
Enemy of the State
Under Suspicion (Not on BD)
The Replacements
The Mexican (Not on BD)
Heartbreakers
Heist (Not on BD)
The Royal Tenenbaums
Behind Enemy Lines
Runaway Jury
Welcome to Mooseport

of the titles not on BD, I would choose
Bat 21
Narrow Margin
Geronimo
and
Uncommon Valor
as my must haves!

What would you choose?

I'm not a fan of Basketball but Hoosiers is the movie I most enjoy of Mr. Hackman's filmography.

I really need to hunt down the Bluray though, I haven't seen that movie since August of 2010.

Nice list, thanks.

Hackman makes for a great villain with his voice and style.
I'm thinking of his voice over as General Mandible in Antz. Great villain in that movie among other roles.

Behind Enemy Lines I remember also.

I have yet to see The French Connection with that big car chase, but it's on my list of movies to see. I had no idea there was a sequel. How was that one?

Full filmography, retired 2004 as the last film. I don't blame him as now he can retire doing all the things he wanted to when not acting.

My two favourite Hackman films are Behind Enemy Lines and Enemy of the State. What a fantastic actor.

excellent films. I also love the fact the Enemy of the State is a loose sequel to The Conversation.

Yes. I really enjoy the adventure of Behind Enemy Lines and Hackman as the guy trying to guide Owen Wilson through it all despite the resistance for Hackman to "Leave it alone or lose your job in the service".

Gene Hackman is one of the best actors in the industry. He even stole the show in: The Birdcage, especially when he dressed in drag and was singing Sister Sledge's: We Are Family. I laughed so hard, that I almost cried. That scene alone was phenomenal!

I'll lend my vote to that one.Could that be labelled as one of all-times under rated movies?Whenever I ask people about it they either haven't seen it,or they thought it was just another sport related movie.A true gem.

I've heard that Hackman can be very difficult to work with and have read some fairly damning stories about him, which if true, don't paint him in a great light.

That said he is a superb actor, my favourite performance of his is probably Crimson Tide, the double whammy of him and Denzel Washington is fantastic.

OP is also missing Eureka (A precursor to There Will Be Blood) which stars Gene alongside Rutger Hauer, Joe Pesci & Mickey Rourke, due to be part of the MOC range in a few months. Last period of the film drags it down, polarising audiences. Certainly has it's moments though.

No love for Penn's Night Moves? A fantastic 70's thriller.

There are two sides to every story! If this is true, than it must be a reason, that the public doesn't know anything about, and what goes on behind the scenes on the set of his films, to provoke his alleged behavior. He couldn't have been that hard to work with, when he starred in copious of films! Gene Hackman is a human being just like everybody else. When you are a professional, and good in your art in the entertainment industry (or at any occupation), you want nothing but excellence as much as possible, which is why Gene Hackman is a superb actor. The general public doesn't know Gene Hackman (the man), the public only know Gene Hackman (the actor)....Besides, nobody is perfect.

Good list but you're missing an excellent movie that is on BD. Prime Cut, starring Hackman and Lee Marvin.

Just bought Heist on DVD. Not waiting any longer for a Blu-ray to see this movie I've heard so much about, not when the DVD is selling for less than $5 brand new.

Such a talented actor. Knows how to get you to have a distaste for his villains. Uncommon Valor would be my pick for a bd. Mississippi Burning needs a wide release to.

Been a big fan of his since I was real young. It's a shame he retired, would have liked to have seen him in a few more movies.

It's funny because although they are just playing characters, Gene Hackman along with James Caan are two of those actors that seem intimidating as all hell. Like you don't want to mess with them or face the wrath hahaha.

What, no love for "The Package"? Well, it's not one of his absolute best, but it's a real treat if you haven't seen it yet.

During the '80s Hackman and Michale Caine were two of my favorite actors. Sadly, much of their '80s output is best forgotten as they were both definitely in paycheck mode back then. Found it amusing that despite their prolific careers, they only were in one film together. And it was one of those star studded films that had "everyone" in it: A Bridge Too Far. Not the greatest film, but it did have great moments.

Four posts above your own I mentioned it and said I liked it

I did see Night Moves for the first time last year. It's a little dated and slow in places but Hackman portrays his character with such depth. The movie is worth it for the twist ending (and open ending...)
