5.1 is the sweet spot; another 2 speakers may add a little, but not enough to go to great lengths. |

7.1 is worth quite a bit of extra trouble and cost -- it's a big step up from 5.1 |

I'm doing a project in my home theater, finishing out the room and furnishing, it running wires, etc. It's come to the point where I have to make somewhat of a "go, no-go" decision on whether 5.1 is it for me (in terms of speaker placement). I've decided those next two speakers in 7.1 do not add enough. The first priority for me is the wall of sound from the front 3. Then the subwoofer. Then the L and R surrounds really add shape to the left and right action.
But the speakers behind add the least of all to me. I have a big room and I just can't easily wall mount them, and I don't want them on stands behind the seating. So I'm cutting bait on that. Do you guys tend to agree? Or are you in the other camp, the "Oh, no, you've got to aspire to 7.1?" |
