Default "Starship Troopers" reboot in the works

why...

=======================================

Mark Swift and Damian Shannon, the writing duo behind the upcoming Zac Efron-Dwayne Johnson 'Baywatch' movie, will write the script for the alien bug war movie.
The bugs are coming back.

Columbia Pictures is rebooting Starship Troopers, the 1997 science fiction film directed by Paul Verhoeven.

The studio has tapped Mark Swift and Damian Shannon, the writing duo behind the upcoming Baywatch movie, to write the script for a new theatrical feature film that would relaunch a potential franchise.

Neal H. Moritz, the producer behind the Fast & Furious franchise, is producing with Toby Jaffe, with whom he worked on the studio’s remake of another 1990s sci-fi pic, Total Recall.

Troopers is based on the sci-fi war novel by Robert A. Heinlein that told the military life of a soldier named Johnny Rico who moves up the ranks as mankind fights a war against alien bugs.

Verhoeven took some of the novel’s themes and ran with them, making a movie that satirically took on fascism and militarism and echoed propaganda films like Leni Riefensthal’s Triumph of the Will. It starred Casper van Dien, Denise Richards, and Neil Patrick Harris.

The movie was a mixed success at the time of its release but did achieve a cult following. During the DVD boom of the 2000’s, it became a mini-franchise for the studio which produced three direct-to-DVD movies.

The studio is not remaking the film but is said to be going back to the original Heinlein novel. No personnel from the 1997 film are involved.

Now, I'm a big big big ridiculously big fan of the original Starship Troopers.

BUT.

I'm also a huge Robert Heinlein fan. There is WAY more to the original book than in the movie.

If they focus on making a NEW adaptation of the book, rather than a REMAKE of the movie. This could be awesome.

I'm all for big-creature flicks, but will only allow myself to be minimally excited for this if the director is respectable.

my shopping list for this movie.

1) Marauder suits
2) Both kinds of aliens, the bugs and the humanoid "skinnies"
3) More of a philosophical tie to Heinlein's work

do it, and I'll be one happy SOB

Hollywood hates Paul Verhoeven. They're seemingly intent on remaking his films into bland, shitty movies. Can't imagine this being any different.

It won't take long before some American studio coaxes Adrian Lyne out of retirement to remake Elle.

What are the chances of seeing Alexandra Daddario blasting away at bugs? Her Blue eyes are the best special - effect a movie could hope to have!

Being that the socio-political black humor and satirizing of fascism in the original will most likely be jettisoned, you can count me out. I love that Paul Verhoeven found Heinlein's book unreadable.

Agree with this. I'm generally against the huge tide of reboots and remakes, but this is a case where it could actually be a whole different animal if they stay more faithful to the original novel. I'm cautiously optimistic.

Love the original im keen to see something. though they have the option to draw more from original Heinlein material, always the potential to plunder I guess. But from the Writers of Baywatch

ya that sure would attract me, even David Hasselhof couldn't stop laughing when he read the script.

I have not read the book, But I have read summations and ideas over the years. I was kinda hoping to see more of the exoskeleton concept that augmented a soldiers endurance it allowed them to carry heavy armaments and fly with a form of rocket boost (I like "Edge of Tommorrow")..This is something I wanted to see when I read an article on the film 17 odd years ago. I believe even the aliens had their own craft in the end. There are some ideas to play with. I get the feeling this will be sterilized like robocop and total recall before hand.

This.

I'm all for a reboot. The book is so rich with elements ignored by Verhoeven.

- Genetically engineered "talking" dogs
- I want to see a planet-buster bomb
