I just got some extra birthday money, and I was thinking of finally pulling the trigger and getting a region-free player. I'm mainly interested in getting classic films of the Criterion or Kino variety which are not available on Blu in the USA, or are available in much better versions abroad. I'm looking at MOC and BFI releases from UK vendors, but I'm interested to hear what suggestions you all may have.
Are there any must-haves in this category, or are there versions to stay away from? (I've read that the Blu of Farenheit 451, for example, isn't much better than the DVD.) And can you recommend any retailers besides the various European Amazon sites? Just to give you an idea of the kind of titles I'm considering, I'm looking at releases like Hitchcock's The Lodger, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Darling, Women In Love and other 1920s-1970s releases. TIA for any suggestions. |
