Default Neat HD vs. SD shots of LOTR

Think HD isn't a big difference over SD? think again:

http://www.cornbread.org/FOTRCompare/index.html

hovering your mouse over each shot reveals the HD shot.

Um, ok, it looks good, but this isn't actually HD is it? I mean it's not a comparison of the DVD against an HD source, just upsampled DVD.

Or am I missing something...!

One's brighter one's darker?

I've got a DVD edition of Trainig Day here, I could get a real comparison going...

The text at top says it's an "HD transfer:"

"Being amazed at how fantastic the HD transfer of Fellowship of the Ring looked, I decided to compare it to the transfer on the DVD."

Perhaps the HD frames are from an HD broadcast/cable... ?

Notice the color difference in the sky in the second frame.

Those HD shots don't reach 1080p quality. Not even 720p quality (Or 1080i )
I have much better.

He mentions that the HD shots are downsampled to DVD-res... Yet they still show better color and detail.

The map shot is pretty incredible when you click on it to see it in detail.
