Default Sound Bar less than 36" long with good sound

I've been through 2 sound bars already and returned them. The first one was a Samsung HW-M450 and the 2nd one was the LG S7J. I was not satisfied with the sound quality from those soundbars but in my opinion the LG one sounded a little better than the Samsung one. Even my Creative Series II T20 PC speakers sounded better (more balanced) than those sound bars in my opinion even though the bass does not go as deep due to lack of subwoofer. I have a feeling I'm just going to have to purchase a pair of bookshelf speakers and a receiver and somehow make room to accomodate the bookshelf speakers if I want better sound than a sound bar and that I won't be satisfied with the sound quality of any sound bar. The only reason I bought a sound bar was because of lack of space for bookshelf speakers. I have a 40" TV. So is there a sound bar that is less than 36" long and not over 3" tall that has good sound quality or am I going to have to resort to a pair of bookshelf speakers and a receiver and find a way to make room for them?

I was considering trying out this sound bar:

However, I don't know the frequency range of the subwoofer and sound bar in this package. Will it go down to 40Hz or lower on the subwoofer?
