Default Children of the Sea [海獣の子供 Kaijū no Kodomo] (Ayumu Watanabe, 2019)

I noticed we didn't have a thread for Studio 4°C's anime film adaptation of the acclaimed manga of the same name.

Ayumu Watanabe is directing. Notably, composer Joe Hisaishi, a frequent collaborator of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli, is scoring the film.

I think this looks utterly gorgeous. Is anyone else here interested?

If there's an English dub, then consider me interested.

I just prefer dubs with these kind of movies. Much like the Studio Ghibli movies, I want to appreciate the artistry, not spend 50% of the movie focusing on the subtitles.

I prefer subs. Especially for a lot of the older anime movies and shows, which had totally inaccurate dubbing that didn't follow the original scripts at the time.

There are very few dubs worth a damn for me to want do that.

But 50% of the time focusing on the subtitles? Slow reader? That's not a knock but I never found it ever diminishing my value of a film. Reading a film, that is.

I prefer subs over dubs but that's just me. Also, when I first glanced at the title of this thread I thought it said "Chicken of the Sea" & immediately thought of lunch.

The ONLY con I can think of about subs is that it's hard to focus on both the visuals and reading all at the same time. You know, I want to fully appreciate the art style too as well.

I hate having to watch my anime subbed. I don't know how I did it for so many years. I find it hard to get the full experience when I'm watching subbed. My focus is on the reading while I miss out on the animation, or I'll have to go back and re-read something another time or two. For example, I watched the back half of The Promised Neverland subbed on my first viewing. Then I rewatched it dubbed last month and realized that I missed so many details/forgot much more than if I'd viewed entirely dubbed.

A majority of the time I prefer the dub voice over the Japanese VA. Unless the dub actor is overused or I don't like them in general. I really can't think of a reason I'd ever want to watch subbed unless the dub was that bad.

Yeah. I mean, I still watch dubbing. Depending how good the voice actors are (Cowboy Bebop) and if the original Japanese director is involved with the English dubbing (FLCL). But I like to think dubbing companies have improved a LOT since then. Unless it's a really bad anime, sometimes the voice actors would just go **** it and make stupid jokes.

But franchises like Dragon Ball I prefer to watch subbed, mainly because the dubbing was so horrible in the early days. Funimation got a lot better with it's dubbing now, but too late. Besides, I don't like how shady some of the Funimation voice actors are. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about, but no need to go into that shitstorm again.
