Default Characters that disappear in movie crowds

Ok, I'm curious and tbh, Google didn't give me results I needed. Possibly because I didn't search what I should have due to not knowing the correct term.

So how do movies make it look like a character just disappears into thin air? One moment they're there in a crowd and then gone. Yet the crowd shot is continuous and the character still disappears. I witnessed it in Knight and Day and got me curious even after pausing and re-watching a few times.

The entire cast of Godspell in the final shot of the film.

It has to be editing. Or the actor ducking out of shot.

I'm pretty sure it's a snazzy edit but I'm curious as to what technique they're using. Looks like a two frame to possible three spliced together. Anybody with more film making knowledge know?

I don't have the film, but that's interesting. I've only seen Knight and Day once in theater (I remember I enjoyed it). Is it an impossibly long single sequence? If so they might use some editing tricks to splice several takes together.

Starts @8:00

Might not be a movie but it's a perfect representation of the disappearing into crowd trope

I just assume that they have a professional magician, like Copperfield or Penn Jillette, on set to execute a trick like that.

I forgot what movie it was. I think it was "In The Line Of Fire", the bad guy does the "Vehicle Vanish" cliche during a chase scene when a bus passes by him, but you can see his feet under the bus running along with it.

My favorite one is still Captain Ron at the end of the movie!

She pulled a Matt Damon from The Bourne Identity. You can still see a bit of her clothes.
