USA Disciples of Shaolin (1975) - December 14, 2021

88 Films will be releasing the Shaw Brothers film Disciples of Shaolin (1975) on December 14th.

Quote:
Another Kung Fu vehicle from the infamous Shaw Brothers Studio, Disciples of Shaolin AKA Hong quan xiao zi, delivers a typically power-packed Hong Kong tale of enemy gangs and super cool fight scenes. When shaolin disciple Kuan Fung Yi (Sheng Fu) takes a job at a textile factory he soon becomes embroiled in a bitter and violent clash with the rival Manchu clan who run a neighbouring mill. As well delivering some impressive martial arts set pieces, Disciples of Shaolin also provides a political punch, underlining the abuse of workers and the corruption of cruel bosses. Fast, fierce and thought provoking, this is a must for collectors of extreme Asian cinema.

It's probably going to be roughly the same PQ. If this was a new transfer then 88 would be using that as a selling point. Otherwise, you get the extras that they are advertising.

Audio should be an improvement since the TVP release was a lossy track, and 88 will be lossless. 88 also offers the English dub, which some prefer for these SB films. Plus improved subtitles, and nice extras.

Haven't see the TVP release, but I'm sure this release is going to look and sound better than it ever has.

Is the DiabolikDVD listing incorrect in failing to advertise it as a limited edition? According to 88's site, at least the UK release also includes:

Quote:
LIMITED EDITION Slipcase with brand-new artwork from R.P. Kung Fu Bob OBrien
Double-Sided A3 Foldout Poster
Extensive Booklet Notes The Visceral Martial Arts Cinema of Chang Cheh by Matthew Edwards, International Bright Young Thing A look back on The Disciples of Shaolin and its charismatic star Alexander Fu Sheng by Andrew Graves and An article By Kung Fu Bob!
Most of Diabolik's 88 USA listings say nothing about limited first runs. I'm not familiar with the label, and I know they're just branching out to the US, so I don't really know what exactly is their norm.

Received my copy a few days ago. I went with the US version to not only save money (as shipping is through the roof these days) but to also to (hopefully) keep 88 interested in continuing to release their titles here when they can.

Got this for my bday, and figured I'd post a few pics of the set. The fold-out reversible poster is nice, and the booklet has some great artwork from Kung Fu Bob as well. This was a blind-buy, so I'm looking forward to watching it, and picking up other Shaw Brothers titles from 88 Films.

That's a nice looking BD set from 88 Films and the PQ look's pretty solid based off those stills though.

Site review is up.

Reviewer Jeffrey Kauffman is curious how this ended up with 88 Films based on Arrow's release of Shawscope Vol. 1. Maybe he doesn't know about 88 Films' history of Shaw Bros. UK releases.

I'm listening to the Samm Deighan's commentary. She's informative, but I want to make her put a dollar in a jar every time she says, "I mentioned earlier."

She also did a very insightful commentary on Vinegar Syndrome's release of Ebola Syndrome.

Huh? Do you mean slip and/or booklet? Or have they dropped extras from the disc?

I just got this from Amazon and it still had the slipcover, booklet, and poster.

In addition to this, I have to say, Im glad I got lucky, the booklet was fantastic, despite the first essay having quite a few grammatical errors, it was a good read as were the other interviews and essays, it was a thicker book than I expected too.

Also loved this movie, I was surprised it doesnt have a higher rating as I found it Fu Shengs best movie where he is the lead. I ended up picking this up literally off the back of enjoying the remake in the Shawscope boxset, but I definitely thought this was superior. I liked it felt unique among Chang Chehs filmography and even inspired the turn to black and white during the Crazy 88 battle in Kill Bill.
