Universal Studios The Electric Horseman (1979)

Universal has The Electric Horseman (1979) scheduled for a Oct 8, 2019 release.

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-E...lu-ray/134991/

Quote:
Robert Redford and Jane Fonda star in The Electric Horseman directed by Academy Award winner Sydney Pollack. Sonny Steele (Redford) is an ex-world champion cowboy who has been reduced to selling breakfast food in a suit studded with flashing lights. Hallie Martin (Fonda) is a chic, sharp member of the electronic media, a TV newswoman who will do anything to get a good story. When Sonny rides out of a Las Vegas casino into the desert astride his sponsor's living symbol, a multi-million dollar racehorse, Hallie is determined to discover why. She stays one step ahead of a posse of pursuing police forming an unlikely bond with both the cowboy and his convictions.

Unless it's a new transfer or has new extras or something, the German Blu-ray from Koch (on a BD-50) is good enough for me.

It has the original music intact, and was licensed by Universal, so I would assume this release should also include the original music.

I don't know much about this, so I'm grain of salting it because of the source, but the IMDb indicates that both DVDs have replaced music:

* The Image DVD replaces Dave Grusin's beautiful "Freedom Epilogue" score music (where the horse is set free) with a reprise of "My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys" by Willie Nelson, originally heard during the opening credits.

* The newer Universal release goes a step further, removing "My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys" from the opening credits (and in fact from the film completely) as well as "Freedom Epilogue" and replaces them both with a very inappropriate generic harmonica-driven instrumental which is meant to sound like a Willie Nelson song.

Is the German version region free? It says B2 on the listing. Thanks.

Haven't checked mine in a while but pretty sure it's "B" locked as nearly all Universal licensed titles are outside the US.

I'm with Berry, that the German release looks fine, has the original songs (haven't checked for the Grusin cue), and will absolutely suffice. I was extremely happy to have it, especially with the score issues on the DVD(s), but with everything released this year I was getting more and more certain that this would see a domestic release before the anniversary year was over.

I'm glad I found this thread, I was wondering about the music from Willie Nelson and if it would be in the film. I had heard his songs were removed from the DVD version.

This movie was the first Robert Redford film that I saw in a theater, I was like 11 years old. It's a good movie, great scenery and the Willie songs really add to the film.

Got my copy yesterday. Only had time to spot check it but yes, it does have the original music.

I just finished watching The Electric Horseman, and it looked great projected at 100 inches.

I've viewed about a dozen of these Universal MOD discs and the quality varies so much, so I popped in the disc with some trepidation, but... I'm pleased to say The Electric Horseman looks filmic, with nicely resolved grain, like a 70's film should, even though it's clear no major restoration work went into the disc.

And that's great news because the film's cinematography is excellent. The scenery (it looks like they filmed in and around Zion National Park in Utah) is really breathtaking.

It was my first time watching the film, and I really enjoyed it. It's one of the better modern-day westerns I can recall seeing. I especially recommend it for horse lovers and people who love "horse" movies.

Sydney Pollack was such a consistent director throughout his career.

Hello Keymaster - just registered to ask if you have the new October 8 release and is the original soundtrack restored? Thanks. Dave

Hey there.

I do have the October 8 release, but it was my first time ever viewing the movie so I'm not sure if the disc has the original soundtrack. The film opens with a Willy Nelson song and closes with one as well, if that helps. Were those songs removed on the previous DVD release?

Whether or not the new disc uses the original soundtrack, I still enjoyed the music in the picture quite a bit.

Thanks for your quick response! The original opening is "My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys" by Willie; there is some discussion of this issue earlier in this thread, and a lot of complaining on Amazon over the years - believe I’ll make an Amazon order hoping the newer one is sent. Dave

There is only one edition of the US blu-ray for the movie so no need to worry about multiple versions floating out there for the new pressed MOD edition

35 mins in and the film is filled with Willie Nelson songs. I would assume all the original music is intact.

I got my Blu ray copy in the mail. I put it in to just take a quick look at it (didn't watch the entire film) but from what I saw I was impressed with the video and audio. However, there is no menu options, it just straight to the movie. I was hoping for some fun extras with the disc.
