Default Couple of newbie questions

Hi, first post here.

Wife gave me a PS3 for my birthday today, which we intend to use primarily as a Blu-Ray player for our 60" Sony SXRD (basically a DLP television, in case you're not familiar). I popped in the "Spiderman 3" Blu-Ray that came with the console, and the picture is phenomenal.

A few questions, after browsing here (and a few other forums) for about an hour:

1. I've read some things about differences in transfer quality on some Blu-Ray discs. Is there a difference in some discs? Is there a list somewhere or an easy way to determine which discs have a better quality picture?

2. Is there a generally agreed-upon or majority opinion on what would be a good first purchase disc or set for the Blu-Ray player? I've got my eye on the BBC Planet Earth series, which I've heard good things about, and also looking at the Blade Runner reissue, but I'd like some reassurance of quality. I'm looking for something with some "wow" factor.

3. Is there anything about the Blu-Ray format that you'd tell someone new right off that they might not know?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Check movie review sites...Hidefdigest being one...although the reviewer is not always right, but its a good way to know what movies look good. Even here on bluray.com in the "movie" section.

Amazon always has great deals, also check out the "Hot Deals" threads. Planet Earth is excellent.

1080p Picture, Lossless Audio on the same disc.

Hey welcome...your wife made a nice choice...

I would recomend Cars,Casino Royale,POTC series just to name a few.....

What to tell people who is new to BLU----

1 1080p transfer to a 50g disc with lossless audio...we don't have a flip side with a DVD transfer on the other side.

Welcom again....

You're dead-on with Spiderman 3, and the Blade Runner set. Also, all 3 Pirate movies (Disney) or any Disney movie, really, will show off your player nicely.

I find the reviews on this site very helpful, especially since they're broken down by seperate reviews of the movie, video, audio, and supplements. They're very very helpful!

Welcome to the forum!!!

1st SXRD is No DLP, it is better. DLP has wobulation ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wobulation ), most have color wheels, DLP some people see rainbows. SXRD has none of that.

Live free die hard
POTC 1,2, & 3
Apocalypto
Cars
The Simpsons
Ratatoulle
Casino Royale
The 5th Element (remastered)
Close Encounters
The Patriot
Black Hawk Down
Blade Runner

Blader Runner is very clean looking, I just watched it last night, it has some 3D pop but not much, like some other movies.

best places to get Blu-rays, Amazon.com & Fry's

ANIMATION = 'Cars' or 'Ratatouille'

LIVE ACTION = 'Pirates 2', 'Casino Royale', 'The Prestige', 'Swordfish', 'Crank' are good places to start.

DOCUMENTARY = 'Galapagos' is far superior in PQ to 'Planet Earth'. 'Planet Earth' is still pretty good though. With 'Planet Earth' it is the material that I found most impressive, not the quality that it was presented in.

LOL

I know it's not a DLP, man. I know what I bought. I've owned it for a few months now. I guess I was foolish to try and explain it in so few words.

Thanks for the continued recommendations, guys.
