Will the ever update the app for the Xbox one S? I have a few 4K digital copies I'd like to watch in 4k

Very few devices have access to the Vudu 4K content. And most of them are TVs. And then even if the XBOne S does get access to Vudu 4K, it's only in Dolby Vision HDR so you can't get any HDR from Vudu with the XBOne S. HDR makes the biggest difference with 4K. So you would have to watch the Vudu content in 4K SDR. Which isn't anything great.

I have 2 4K tvs, one with HDR and one without. They both look great so even if it doesn't put out HDR it will still be a higher quality then blu ray...anyone that says otherwise has their head up their ass |

UHD streaming in SDR, with the low 16Mb/s bitrates, have a quality similar to a 1080P Blu-ray Disc. HDR is what makes the biggest difference with the UHD streaming services like Vudu, Netflix and Amazon. Of course a UHD BD with HDR is the best quality with bitrates sometimes exceeding 100Mb/s with many titles. Much, much better than any of the low 16Mb/s bitrate streaming sources.

Ive compared Vudu 4k sdr to blu ray, not a giant difference to me. Perhaps if the title was native 4k and not 2k upscale. Mostly 2k upscales on vudu. Stacey Spears of spectracal did a vudu comparison of blu ray but using DolbyVision, not sdr. Even with DV, on Man of Steel, there was texture and detail loss as if it was smoothed over. Without hdr, it just doesn't seem worth it to me. I'll take disc all day everyday over vudu. I think 4k sdr on Netflix Is better than vudu (netflix is strict with 4k cameras and 4k mastering whereas vudu is 99% upscales). |

Yeah it's been my experience that streaming SDR 4K = 1080p Blu-ray. Depending on title sometimes a little more or less, but roughly equal. The low bit rate of streaming scrubs away a lot of the fine detail that otherwise would be visible with a proper bit rate.
As for HDR, yeah it makes a big difference, but that's true whether it's disc or streaming. I found a huge difference in quality streaming Angry Birds HDR from the Sony app, compared to the UHD BD. It wasn't even close. |

Same thing for me with Smurfs 2 hdr on amazon compared to the disc. Disc was way better. With streaming, native 4k is just enough to squeeze out that edge. AVFORUMS recently reviewed Narcos blu ray season 1 and compared it to the Netflix 4k version, they found the Netflix 4k to be slightly better with the benefits still noticeable at regular viewing distances. But a disc version of 4k Narcos would be even better and widen the gap between blu ray. |
