I never saw The Bob Newheart Show in re-runs, but saw Newheart when it was in regular syndication. Great family show.

Loved both, but I give the edge to the original.

I grew up watching Newhart during its original run and it was one of my favorite sitcoms. I never saw The Bob Newhart Show until fairly recently. They currently air the two shows back to back on the Decades channel, weekdays from 4 to 5 PM.

Of course, they are vandalized versions (cropped to 16:9) and they digitally compress the living daylights out of them, especially Newhart. When they originally aired they were approximately LaserDisc quality (if you had perfect reception), and in the correct aspect ratio. Now they're in the wrong aspect ratio and are YouTube 240p quality. As a "bonus" they have a particularly conspicuous, ever-present "Decades" watermark to boot. Isn't "progress" wonderful?

I like Bob on the older show, but the other main characters seem generic to me. On the newer show, for the majority of the run, the only generic main character was the wife played by Mary Frann. Michael & Stephanie, George Utley, and Larry, Darryl & Darryl were all creative and entertaining characters; sometimes hilarious.

As a side note, it seems that you can't buy the complete Newhart series on DVD as a box set because, as far as I can tell, Shout Factory has the rights to seasons 2-8 and 20th Century Fox has the rights to season 1.

You can buy them all shrink-wrapped together and marketed as the complete series, from places like Amazon or eBay, but they must be bootlegs.

Based on reviews from people who have bought one of those dubious "complete series" DVD sets, the disc labels and case sleeves are poorly printed with an inkjet printer, the discs are single-layer with video files shrunk to about 60% of the size they are on the original double-layer DVDs, and the video files were generated by DVDFab software.

I want the whole series on DVD but I'm kind of at an impasse right now because I definitely don't want bootleg DVDs and buying each season brand new, one at a time, from a known-good retailer like Best Buy, would end up costing way more (probably around $200 shipped) than what it's worth to me.

I never saw the original show, but I did enjoy Newhart as a kid. I didn't watch it regularly, but would often come across it on cable, and would check it out if nothing else was on.
