United Kingdom King Ralph (1991) - Fabulous Films

Release date: June 6th

Theatrical Trailer (1:32)
1.85:1 1080p AVC MPEG-4
English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Stereo

Annoyingly no subtitles even though their recent DVD port did have them.

Gave a check disc a spun already. Definitely a dated off-the-shelf master. Quite a bit of edge enhancement, blacks nowhere near deep enough, very light damage at times by way of specks and a couple of wee scratches (especially external stock footage shots). Decent levels of grain but details are sometimes lacking. Certainly the best I have seen the film look and an obvious improvement on the DVD (which looked a bit crap too for the format), but a lot of room for improvement. Probably a generous 3/5 for me in all honesty and some might think I am being generous.

Ok film, but isn't this label crap for BDs?

They are hit and miss. Use off-the-shelf masters. Released several nice discs like The Relic and Fierce Creatures, and several howlers like Killing Zoe and Shopping. Some have been upgrades with a lot of room for improvement like this title and Return of the Pink Panther.

I have so far watched this and Brewster's Millions which looks decent IMO.

I also have Cheech and Chong's Next Movie, Jetsons: The Movie, and Dragnet sitting here to look through.

They are if you're region locked. Their unskippable startup logo is in a PAL video format. It'll hitch up a regular US player keeping you from accessing the menu, so even if the disc says A/B/C you aren't going to be able to view the movie.

Don't mind this movie but another movie that is over priced at the moment from Fabulous Films.

Anyone know why these are priced so high?

Fierce Creatures was nice? I thought it was pretty awful. Lots of EE and DNR. Dated Universal style transfer.

I think Fierce Creatures is at the better end of the spectrum for Universal catalogue transfers. I gave the transfer a 3.25/5 when I watched it. I noted:
Quote:
It does still suffer from the typical dreaded digital noise reduction and edge enhancement that Universal have become renowned for. Although there is some obvious digital noise reduction, it must be said that it is certainly nowhere near as bad as other Universal efforts like "Weird Science". Faces are a little waxy, but at the same time, there's still some good detail shown throughout. Colours are bright and vivid and blacks are dark and inky, though some minor crush is visible during scenes in darker office and internal environments. The edge enhancement is noticeable, but isn't overly distracting, and there is some minor banding in a couple of skylines.
Like with anything. YMMV depending on your expectations.

Rewatched this yesterday, first time in many, many years. I really enjoyed it, a lot of fun and Goodmayes and O'Toole were great.

Default Go for another one

I was thinking the same. They should have given subtitle and I am amazed to see the cost. I though of watching this movie for the sake of John but I don't think I shall watch it

Ironically the German disc has English subtitles: the UK one does not.
