Have seen the film. Pretty good, touching and everything - like most of the GOOD war movies tend to be.

But

from the review : "On the morning of June 22, 1941, Operation Barbarossa is initiated and Brest attacked. First the fortress is bombed and the majority of the buildings in it destroyed, then the Nazis appear, wearing Soviet uniforms."

Dr. Svet Atanasov - how do you know that all those Germans were Nazis ? or does German equal Nazi ? Does white equal racist ?

If you would do your home work on WWII you would know that not all Germans were Nazis. Many even wanted and tried to kill Hitler. Many despised him. in high ranks. Check the leaders of Operation Barbarossa. None of them were friends with Hitler. They fought for their Country, not for Nazi Ideology.

Did you know that us, Finns, fought side by side with Germans, and we were certainly not Nazis. Two of my grandfathers were in WWII. why - because so touchy and wonderful Soviet union invaded our Country and we were standing alone. Check the sizes of our nations, military and weapon recourses. But at the end of WWII, when we had stood up for USSR - and made piece, we turned against Germans - and ran them out of our Country.

from wikipedia : "The Winter War (Finnish: Talvisota, Swedish: Vinterkriget, Russian: Зимняя война (trans. Zimnyaya voyna)[25] was a military conflict between the Soviet Union and Finland. It began with a Soviet offensive on 30 November 1939 – three months after the start of World War II and the Soviet invasion of Poland – and ended on 13 March 1940 with the Moscow Peace Treaty. The League of Nations deemed the attack illegal and expelled the Soviet Union from the League on 14 December 1939.[26]

The Soviet forces had three times as many soldiers as the Finns, 30 times as many aircraft, and a hundred times as many tanks
. "

From another article in wp :

"Finland and Nazi Germany

During the Continuation War (1941–1944) Finland was co-belligerent with Nazi Germany, and dependent on food, fuel and armament shipments from Germany. The country did, however, retain a democratic form of government. During the war Germany and Finland were united by a common enemy, the Soviet Union, yet Finland kept its army outside the German command structure despite numerous attempts to tie them more tightly together.

Finnish Jews were not persecuted, and even among extremists of the Finnish Right they were highly tolerated, as many leaders of the movement came from the clergy. Of approximately 500 Jewish refugees, eight were handed over to the Germans, a fact for which Finnish prime minister Paavo Lipponen issued an official apology in 2000. The field synagogue operated by the Finnish army was probably a unique phenomenon in the Eastern Front of the war.[4] Finnish Jews fought alongside other Finns for their country's freedom.[5]"

if I´m banned for saying this - so be it, but truth is all Germans WERE NOT Nazis - and one should not make such statements or led to believe so.

thanks and sorry for ranting - history is a kind of passion of mine ...

Thank you for your comments.

1. What you commented on is a review for a fictional film (which only happens to be inspired by a true event), not a documentary film. This is not an article on the history of WW2 and/or the identity of the German soldiers who fought the war. Since the review did not claim that ALL Germans were Nazis, I fail to see why you are upset by it.

2. The German soldiers in the film are Nazis because they don't have real identities. Like the story the film tells (which surely you do not believe happened exactly as filmed by director Kott), they are fictional characters. Yet it seems to me you wish to argue that they weren't. Let me ask you then: Since the review did not claim that ALL German soldiers were Nazis, how do you know that the soldiers who attacked the fortress weren't Nazis? Can you cite all of their names here? Can you prove that they were not members of the Nazi party?

I understand what you are trying to say, and in fact I agree with your observation more than you could even begin to imagine, but this isn't the correct observation to interject in a discussion about a film, which isn't even a documentary film trying to educate its audience or offer some accurate historical analysis of a tragic event and those who took part in it 70 years ago.

Thank you for reading

Pro-B
