A year ago, when 4K Blu-ray was getting ready to launch, I was excited to eventually upgrade my 1080P Epson projector to a 4K projector. A year later, 4K projectors are still ridiculously expensive.
I recently purchased my first 4K TV, an LG 55" OLED C6. I'm blown away by its infinite contrast and colors it can generate. Now, I'm not so sure I want to upgrade my HT projector at all. I'm starting to feel it would be better to wait until 80"+ OLED screens come down in price to the $3-4K range. I wouldn't be surprised if that happens at roughly the same time quality 4K projectors come down to the same price. If so, I can't think of a single reason I wouldn't want to replace my projector and 92" screen with an actual TV, even if it is slightly smaller. I'd like to hear others thoughts/plans for upgrading their HT projectors. Obviously, my strategy might not be as viable for those with 120"+ screens (at least in the near future). Would you be willing to give up a little screen size to get the added benefits of a brighter, better contrast picture only TVs can provide? |

I am one with a 120"+ screen, so it's not, nor will it ever be viable. Even if they made a TV that big, I could not move it down the stairs and through the doorway into my theater.
I definitely wouldn't mind an 80-90" TV in my living room though. I'll eventually get a 4k or E-shift 4k projector to replace my current one. Then at some point I'll upgrade my TV as well. Last edited by Kevinicus; 12-06-2016 at 08:29 PM. |

Good point. My home theater is downstairs as well, so that would ultimately limit the size of screen I could bring down in one piece. I can't easily increase my screen size for projection either since I'm limited by the throw distance in my theater room.
I still think it would be worth giving up 4-12" of screen size to upgrade my theater to OLED as well. I was seriously considering the Epson 5040UB before I got my new TV, but now it would bother me that I'm not viewing a true 4K picture (even if the difference is not easily noticeable). Either way, I won't be able to afford upgrading my theater to 4K for at least a few more years. I'm just growing impatient now since my family room where the 4K TV is located is right below my kids' bedrooms. So I can't blast the volume at night like I can down in the basement theater. ![]() Last edited by rbg08; 12-08-2016 at 02:36 PM. |

I am someone who finds the sheer size of a projector image much more immersive an experience than a picture that is 100% scientifically perfect and free from any artifacts or image issues (does that even exist?). So although TV's will always be better from a video quality perspective I will choose a projector everytime for my serious viewing. I want to escape into whatever I am watching and a projector allows me to do that better than a TV.

I had a Optima HD20 projector ion my living room with a 135" motorized screen. Then I got married and replaced it with a Vizio 55" P series 4K UHDTV. I have not really missed the projector. I got my 3000 hours out of it in the four years I had it, and I ended up only having to pay about $400 for the whole setup after selling the projector and screen on Craigslist.

I would say it's probably going to be the opposite. If laser projection takes off and they continue to develop the technology so that they have a long lifespan that will be the future. A small projection unit with a completely customizable screen size to suit anyone's room and layout...that's the way to go. The trend is that screens are getting bigger and bigger but you reach a limit with a fixed TV for what you can manoeuvre into a home or room. With a projector you don't have this problem...
