Not to be outdone, it seems Sony Japan will re-release Santana's Lotus (1973) in Japan on April 19th, as a Hybrid 4.0 Multichannel SACD with 35 minutes of extra tracks. Extras will also be included, and the release will once again use Mini-LP style packaging. Needless to say, it is also a Limited Edition.

このライヴ盤は73年7月3日と4日の大阪公演を収録しており、第一絶頂期にある若きサンタナ・バンドが日 本のオーディエンスを前に繰り広げた凄まじい演奏と、のちにギネス世界記録にも認定される“22面体ジャケ ット”という破格のスケールを持つアートワークが今もなお語り継がれるライヴ・イン・ジャパンの金字塔的作 品。企画から録音、写真、デザインなどレコード制作に必要なすべてを日本人が手掛けたこともあり、日本のサ ンタナ・ファンにとっては特別な意味を持つ作品でもある。そんな『ロータスの伝説』の録音で実際に使用され たアナログ・マルチテープが、日本のソニーミュージックの倉庫に長年保管されたままであることが昨年暮れに 発覚、実に44年ぶりに蔵出しされた。74年以降は一度も使用されることがなかったアナログ・マルチテープ は、一部テープ交換のため演奏が途切れている曲や何らかの理由で紛失したリールがあったものの、コンサート 2日分の大半の演奏記録が70年代のテープとは思えないほど良好なコンディションにあることが判明。アナロ グLPの収録分数の関係で当時やむなくカットされた音源もしっかりと残されており、オリジナル盤にはない「 ジャパン」「バンベレ」「ウム・ウム・ウム」「聖なる光」「ザ・クリエイター・ハズ・ア・マスター・プラン 」「セイヴァー」「コンガ・ソロ」の7曲（約35分）を新たに加えることにより、大阪で演奏された全曲目が ここに揃うこととなった。これら発掘音源のミックスはオリジナル『ロータスの伝説』やベック・ボガート＆ア ピス『ライヴ・イン・ジャパン』など数多くの名盤を手掛けてきたエンジニア・鈴木智雄によって行われた。既 発音源と極力違和感のないサウンドにすべく慎重に機材やケーブルを選定した上でミックスされ、アナログ・テ ープの持つナチュラルでダイナミックな音像を保ったままミックス・マスターに落とし込まれた。オリジナル盤 に欠けていた7つのピース（楽曲）は実際の曲順通りの場所に見事に収められ、頭から最後まで余すことなく「 完全版」となって稀代の名演が蘇った。

44年ぶりに未公開音源を聴いたカルロス・サンタナから日本のファンへ向けた最新コメントが届いた 。

また、発掘音源の収録だけでは終わらないのが「完全版」たる所以で、日本オリジナルLP盤で採用されたクア ドラフォニッック・ヴァージョン（4chサラウンド・ミックス）も今回世界初の復活を遂げ、さらには超高解 像度であるDSD 11.2MHzマスタリングによるSACD 4.0、SACD 2ch、CDを擁した高音質ハイブリッド盤となっている。加えて、あの横尾忠則が手掛けた空前絶後の“22 面体ジャケット”がオリジナルに忠実に7インチ・サイズで復刻されるほか、当時のツアー・パンフレットや大 阪公演チケットのレプリカ、豪華別冊ブックレットなども封入される。まさに世界のサンタナ・ファンが再び驚 愕すること必至の“究極のロータス”が、ここ日本で誕生した。

I understand Sony Japan really outdid themselves with the production and packaging on this. I hope they sell tons of them, and produce many more titles on JSACD this way. While I love Santana's studio output around the time of Lotus, I could never get into this album. I did buy one of the Jeff Beck JSACD multichannel releases and it was worth every penny. Hopefully many more are coming from Sony/Epic/Columbia vaults.
