Default So, what's next?

Now that we have Warner on our side, who do you think will be the next domino to fall: a major studio (like Universal or Para*****) or a major retail outfit like Best Buy or CC?

i have to agree with that. Or Circuit City... They have a history of trying multiple formats and failing.

Doubt it will be a brick and mortar store - Paramount is still under contract - Universal is probably next, but with that idiot Graffeo at command, not for some time. Months, though. Shouldn't last longer than this holiday season.

Let's be realists....if I see one more person saying 'Transformers out in February!' or 'Lucas Now Announces Star Wars on Blu!' or 'Batman Begins out next week!' I'm gonna go crazy.

I think a lot of retail stores will become Blu-Ray exclusive supporters. They never liked dedicating precious shelf space to two different formats in the first place. It wouldn't surprise me if stores like BB would start to not replenish their HD-DVD stock and just sell what they have left. And others will follow... "There can be only One" and that of course is Blu :-)

It will be a race between the retailers to see who drops HD DVD first. That format is now dead at retail. It will be funny at stores seeing 10-1 stock for Blu-ray.

My local BB just switched the HD section again. Blu has now a entire row and HD DVD was cut down to two sections.

Time to enjoy our format and relax.

Wal-mart. They're merciless with their shelf space allocations.

Honestly I think the next important step is that Para and Universal will probably not release many titles over the next year.. which will make this all much worse for HD-DVD supporters and the format. The % shift in sales will be quite large I think.

VHS was the de facto standard for years and had a MASSIVE installed base, WM held on to the end because those too cheap to upgrade to DVD tend to shop at places like Wal-Mart. HD-DVD has a very minimal installed base that will soon be dwarfed by the BR installed base, that's an *entirely* different situation.

BB will probably drop selling HD DVD players but title sales will continue for a while. Warner is still releasing on that format until May. Selling players to the public knowing the format is going away would be suicide.

I'm thinking Weinstein and Best Buy are next.

Although, we all seem to be making a pretty big assumption that P-man's "big retailer" is in fact Best Buy.

BestBuy and I think sooner rather than later. CC and WallMart will follow. Next xmas will be 100% blu. Amazon will have it.

I think you will see retailers start leaning more and more Blu as the coming months go by. Universal and Paramount will probably stick it out till the end of their contracts then go Blu or neutral. Too soon to really say until we hear a response from the Red side.
